The shot gun was a skeet semi auto made in Japan for S&W very deep blueing but never became popular in gun circles. I trade a motorcycle and some boot for it in 1976 and even now lost money on that deal. The 45/70 is a Marlin lever action. Over and under shot guns have one barrel on top of the other like a ruger overandunder generally using the same gauge. Used heavily in bird hunting two shots then reload. Double barrel as the name implies two barrels side by side. There are companies that make a rifle and shotgun combination Savage and CZ make them as well as others. Having never owned or shot this type my knowledge is somewhat limited.

Over and unders were designed to allow the hunter to have one gun that served two purposes and if for instance you were hunting birds and a coyote came close you could shot him with the rifle therefore the dual purpose.

This lever action I obtained was more for my collection purposes to complement my 44 Marlin. The 45/70 is an old caliber dating back to the 1800s. Lots of knock down power but limited range.

5:30AM PST and evacuation orders are still in place for low lying areas along the Feather River below the Oroville Dam. There are no reports of flooding, and looking out my back door at Lake Oroville, water is down a couple of feet from where it was when the sun went down last night, consistent with the CDEC readings of 898.19'.

Good Morning! 44F @ 5:45AM. Partly to mostly cloudy. High near 60F. Winds light and variable.

Quite a bit of excitement at around 5PM yesterday when the Butte Co. Sheriff announced and evacuation for low lying areas below the Oroville Dam. That included all of the town of Oroville and over 180,000 people along the Feather River/Highway 70 corridor going south. Traffic on Highway 70 northbound out of Oroville was jammed as everyone scampered for high ground in Chico, the next largest town north. Many evacuation shelters have been set up and everyone seems to have found a place to spend the night.

This morning, main highways 70 and 99 going into the evacuation areas are closed and those needing to go south are being sent west to I5. The problem that triggered the evacuations was a "boil" near the top of the auxiliary spillway that was activated for the first time Saturday morning. Officials were concerned that the boil signaled water percolating under the weir where water leaves the lake and enters the auxiliary spillway. If that is the case, the top several feet of the spillway could fail resulting in a huge release of lake water, estimated to be a 30' wall of water coming down the river. Flows over the damaged main spillway were doubled to 100,000 CFS in an effort to lower the lake level below the 901' level of the auxiliary spillway. Overnight the level dropped to 898' and water is no longer flowing over the auxiliary spillway. We'll know more about the boil after the sun gets up, but plans last night called for filling it with large boulders put in place by heavy lift helicopters.

DWR is maintaining 100,000 CFS over the main spillway in hopes of lowering the lake level another 50' before another series of storms roll in Wednesday night. DWR officials continue to reiterate that the Oroville Dam itself has never been in danger of failing. That hasn't stopped the fear mongering going on here on other TBN threads and across the Interwebs as Chicken Little conspiracy theorists spew their shameful lies.

As a retired engineer my heart goes out to the people working to reason their way toward a solution. They are dealing with 40+ year old infrastructure and most of the people that designed and built it are no longer available to lend their experience and guidance to the effort. They're also up against Mother Nature and have no control over the path she takes. If these challenges weren't enough, the attitudes held by much of the press and the public are especially unfriendly to technology, especially that which impacts the environment. The biggest contribution this forum can make is to facilitate the dissemination of factual information related to the spillway failure to counter the fear mongering that's already going on and the witch hunts that will surely follow.

27°F and clear skies this morning, going up to 50° today. Had to scrape frost from the windshields this morning. Will be glad when the remodel is done so we can get use of our garage back. The back half is full of furniture and stuff we had to move out of the house, and we left the carpenter the front half to use as a shop area.

Picked up the new front door from Lowe's on Saturday, so that should be installed sometime this week. The sunroom has three walls and a roof, and is wrapped. Carpenter installed the two doors and one of the windows. Remaining 10 windows should go in this week. Electrician has it all wired to boxes, too. Switched sunroom door knobs and deadbolt locks yesterday to new ones so all doors are now keyed the same. Plumber is there today to run pipes to the new laundry room.

Heard on the radio this morning about the Oroville evacuation. We've had a lot of bad flooding here in the STL area, but it is always from steadily rising Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, and we know plenty in advance that it's coming. I can't even imagine the thoughts about living below that dam and the potential it represents. Hope things work out OK out there.

Some of our snow has melted, down to about 6-8 inches on the ground. Sunny and a high of 10C today should help the melt. Tomorrow night they are forecasting a rain storm with up to 4-5 inches of rain over a 3 day period.

I would think an over-under would be a heavy gun.

Drew, here a few people still buy new side-by-sides for their classic elegant looks (and they are slightly easier to reload quickly), though over-and-unders now dominate the game scene (pheasant and partridge) and clay pigeon. All break barrels have one tremendous advantage when shooting with other people, they can be carried with the barrels broken to clearly show to everyone around that the gun is not loaded. With modern materials they can make over-and-unders extremely lightweight if that's what you want, although in truth some weight is good if you don't want to bruise your shoulder with repeated recoil.

You can also get a combination of rifled and smooth barrels in a three barreled gun. We use the German word "Drilling" for these. Not at all common, but if you fancy plinking out back with one, you could do a lot worse than to treat yourself to one of these that I see are sold in America with that same name Blaser USA: D99 Drillings

If anyone wants to find out what is happening in Oroville, may I suggest you exercise extreme caution in searching the web, it is far less dangerous to wait and get the story from our man on spot, RNG. You see, there is the possibility that you could inadvertently come across "Orville" - not Wilbur Wright's brother, but "Orville the duck", a bright green ventriloquist's dummy that used to appear far too frequently on British TV. A few minutes of Orville can leave you feeling quite nauseous, or in extreme cases you may completely loose the will to live (only small children seem to have any natural immunity ).
