should have been mowing today but played in the dirt instead...not a hard choice.
Settling next week on the adjacent acre of farm land, owner said fine for me to till it up today for weed control.
Another neighbor had been given a free Woods tiller, then he sold his tractor, so he gave the GT60 to me. I expected all kinds of issues but
it did a wonderful job pulverizing the soil down at least six or seven inches. Sandy soil is just marvelous to rototill...

Had my first edible pod peas in a salad tonight. Yum.

Drew, your garden is looking good. I had my first ripe tomato a couple days ago. Only two things money can't buy. That's true love and home grown tomatoes. . . . . .

{RIP Guy Clark}

David. I've had batteries do the same. Show good and an hour later show bad.

Drew. What are you going to plant on that acre.

Nice job, Drew

Got some mowing in myself today :)

Cut and installed new lattice on my bigger deck and back porch, watered my flowers, sat on my deck, and about dark the dam# coon that's been eating cat food and digging holes showed up. I yelled and he just looked at me, went in grabbed a .410, came back to the deck and he hauled it before I could shoot. Tomorrow night the gun, one of them and a strong light are going with me.

Went over onto my neighbors property and scoped out the loggers. They brought in a Morooka tracked vehicle ... was originally a dump but has been converted over to a tracked skidder with a knuckle boom loader. 24" wide tracks so theoretically it should have a fairly light footprint:. It's about dead-center in the picture below.

He's loaded up and moving out in this one:

I think the dozer over on the right was a Case 450.

Talked to the guy running the dozer for a bit ... they're all Amish. He seemed kinda unhappy about the clear-cut aspect ... just kinda shook his head ... claimed to be more selective logging/managed woods fan.

Spent pretty much the rest of the day clearing and cleaning up the garden area. Got the last standing tree out ... only thing that's left is a pallet of of lumber (PT and some actual redwood from the old deck)

A little panorama:

Still very wet down at the bottom ... another dry day or two with temps in the 80's and it would probably be dry enough to drive over without leaving ruts ... at least with my little machine. But that probably ain't gonna happen. Been dragging wet dirt out and dry down with the landscape rake, which should help dry it up some. Need to get it graded so it will drain better.

Worked an 8' x 30' area (along the eastern perimeter, which is where all the trees were) with the root rake, ... popped up a lot of roots and then drug them up to the top to add them to the brush pile. Still have a lot of area to cover to get the roots out.

Long day and I'm tired.

I finally got the time to mow the yard after about 2 weeks. I believe with all the rain, that it was the deepest I've ever had to cut it. Thick hibrid bermuda about 10" high. I mowed it back down to 2.5" with all the rain in the forecast this week. My 17 hp Kawasaki engined LT180 plowed through it.

I have to travel home tomorrow. My 86 year old mom has to have a pacemaker implanted. She was supposed to get it done in 2 more weeks, but apparently they did not like what they were seeing on her heart monitor. High beats per minute and high blood pressure. She is really nervous about this.

Don, is 0% fat free Greek yogurt with active cultures OK for your diet?

Good morning all. Like Kev, I was planning on a bit of painting this morning but as it's now raining I will have a second cup of tea and a rethink. Really I should be going at the weeds that are starting to take over the pasture.

I've gone all organic, not a drop of pesticide to be used. It wasn't something I planned to do, it's just that they changed the regulations for older people and now someone has to come out and watch a group of us each spray pure water, then pass a written test, before we can be let loose in fields again. Only problem is that there are a lot of people waiting to be tested and very few examiners. I reckon the thistles must have worked this out as they are emerging in places that were relatively weed free last year. They are all taunting me, forming perfect rosettes that would be ideal for spraying and keeping just below the height of a cutting blade.

Ed Have you planned where everything is going to go in your new workshop ? Some people would have the layout already modelled with animated 3D CAD drawings. I'm guessing you will be taking a more relaxed approach :)

farmer, that looked a very nice hay rake you put up pictures of the other day. Is it dry enough where you live to only rake and not have to use a tedder ?

Drew, there is something about the look of freshly tilled soil that is so satisfying, even if it does only last for a few days.

Kyle, hope your mom only has a brief stay in hospital - and no dancing for a few days after coming out.

Kyle, please tell your mom several hundred good looking guys want her to get better.

was going to mow all day but only time to get a haircut was midmorning and that goofs up my schedule.
So this will be a long afternoon. Going to mow today and tomorrow bring my travel trailer back home for a week. Then off I go to the shore at Emerald Isle first week of June, the beach area between Wilmington and Beaufort, for a week of sun and fun. Well, that's sun under a big umbrella. After having two melanomas carved off me, my respect for the sun is pretty high. But I'm going to have a fun geek attack and go look for doubloons on the beach with my metal detector. Until then, I need to wash the trailer and stock it with food. It's about a two hour drive from here, a good first trip for me.
I was at Holiday Trav'l Park before several years ago, with my motorhome, and wanted to go back. And now I am.

I am planting about a dozen varieties of sunflowers in my newly tilled area, plotted out on Excel so I could figure out how many linear feet in a seed package, so the five rows of sunflowers are somewhat even at the end. All for fun and the birds.

I farmed 200 ac for 20 years and I used to take a hoe and chop each thistle of just below ground level. Took a while but it worked well if the hoe was sharp.

I have figured out that the wood shop is going in the basement and the sharpening shop is going in the main shop outside and the blacksmith shop will be in a shed on the south end. Where the mill and lathe are going only God knows. I just know that I have more tools and equipment that I have room for in any shop I can build in my back yard. Feel like the 20 clowns getting in a little car at the circus. Ed
