You can taste fear? Is it something that is secreted by the animal body that ends up in their muscle which ends up in your body?

Do you have a reference, I could really use this info.

You can taste the struggle of fear or whatever it is that causes the animal to fear. Something gets secreted and it shows up in game meat because I have tasted the difference.

When we use to work in the woods or farm in northern New England, coyotes were a severe problem attacking farm animals so we were occasionally armed. When we were armed, the coyotes kept their distance and were usually partially hidden. Unarmed and they ran close to us to catch mice. I remember reading the same thing about wolves and that they could smell fear. If you can smell it, I say you can taste it.

Adrenaline. If you chase feral hogs and kill them while they're still excited, the meat is not great. The adrenaline goes to their muscle mass when they are excited or being chased by dogs, etc.

We've found that, taking feral hogs alive, and allowing them to calm down, before the kill, results in meat better than you buy in the store.

Gonna hook up the BH today on the BX25D and dang if it ain't sunk to the ground - well below the tractor's sub-frame. Guess I'll have to use the bucket and chains to lift it and put some blocks under it. Part of the learning process with new unit - set the BH on blocks when off-loading.

Stress=Fear=adrenalin=increased heart rate=increased blood flow. Then the blood is absorbed into the meat. Along with the adrenalin and other chemicals.

Here's an excerpt from this link.

Meat's flavour is dependent on many things - the way the animal was fed, the way it was raised, the fat content of its meat, and the way, after slaughter, the meat was conditioned and matured. But chemical analysis of muscle tissue now shows that a key factor is stress. Excite or frighten an animal - or a human being - and blood, adrenaline and other hormones will rush to muscles, getting them ready for action. This will alter the acid levels in the meat, affecting the colour, the taste and the texture. The technical term for beef that's been damaged by this sort of stress is 'dark cutting meat', because of the distinct colour and texture. One cattle farmer told me: 'It's like eating the sole of your boot.'

You can find more scientific articles but I liked this one.

It's no secret that calmer cattle preform better and taste better. Really this is true with all animals. If we are just deworming cattle and don't need to catch them in the head gate then we don't. We run a full alleyway and deworm everyone. Then turn them all out. Less stress. With the chickens we control light intensity to control birds flightiness.

Good morning all. 50F this morning and clear after a 10 minute shower last night (per wife). More water on the side of the rain gauge than on the bottom, calling it a trace amount. Breezy today, winds 14+ mph. Finish 10-speed get mower ready, need to mow a bunch of leaves.

You give me way too much credit. Far from self control, it was a matter of priorities. I HAD to get the cottage remodel back into habitable shape, which I almost did about an hour and half before their arrival SuperBowl Sunday. Then this week I had to take care of those few things I didn't get to like converting the dryer to propane, replacing the suddenly leaking faucet, finding and replacing the suddenly temperamental gas range. Of course now I had the assistance of my visiting Canadian to assist with the flail. And yes, the packing iron will be reused, pallet, not likely, plastic and cardboard off to garbage point.

Good Morning! 70F @ 10:00 AM. Sunshine and a few afternoon clouds. High 79F. Winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph.

There's a weather advisory for record temps today, and rain/snow on Wednesday. Was hoping to light a brush pile this morning, but there may be too much wind.

Spent the last four days in Death Valley at Furnace Creek, an annual camp out with my Airheads motorcycle group. Fantastic weather, with blue skies, gentle breezes, and highs in the low 80s. Rains earlier this year have really brought out the wildflowers. Here's a shot taken from the bottom of Jubilee Pass, a road now closed by those same rains:

2016DesertGoldJubile.jpg

One of the attendees, traveling very light, just spread his groundcloth and blanket on the ground Saturday night and went to sleep. He was awakened by someone tugging on his blanket, one of his friends playing a joke he thought. In the process his foot became exposed, and the tugging transferred to the sock on that foot. Now awake and exasperated, he was about to let loose on the friend when he saw that it was not one of his buddies, but instead a rather large coyote, baring its teeth and growling. Apparently his sock was quite flavorful. It got a face full of foot and his yell awakened other campers, who together made enough noise to scare away it and the rest of the pack. I've never seen such action in 30 years of camping at the park, yet the Park Service does nothing about it even though it's now quite common. Just like the fires devastating our wildest land, it's a man made problem and under their mismanagement nothing will be done until there's a tragic "accident".

Don, I was quite impressed with Christy's composure, but disappointed in Steve Harvey's slimy demeanor and comments. How did her date go?

Just sold my old flail. Must have priced it right, on Craigslist almost 2 hours. New owner seemed quite happy with it. He rehabs and sells tractor equipment. A quick look over and decided he didn't need to see it in operation. He's happy, wife's happy, I'm happy. Now to explore my hydraulic options :)

Did get a custom door frame built and stained today. First time I used my radial arm saw and jointer in a year. still snowing / sleeting some, but has slowed down. 25 out, which now feels warm after the cold last week.

RNG, I agree completely. She was sweet and Harvey was toxic. He came off as an utter jerk and she came off as a nice lady
trying to make the best of things; as in put in a stupid position by a Hollywood type with the IQ of a modest lightbulb.

Toppop, slow and easy on that snow shoveling. Hopefully it will all melt tomorrow. Going to be 60 here. I hope...

Now I know why they massage the Kobe beef with beer. It's likely less the beer
than the massage. And when Big Fred comes back from the cow spa,
all relaxed and really feeling good about the world,
well he'll be just extra delicious.
Contented cows.

Now that makes me chuckle. My mother was a very small town lawyer, one of the first lady lawyers in our local court in Doylestown PA. As a little kid I wandered the halls of the court house where she clerked for several judges.
One of her clients was a group of dairy farmers who were suing the local drag strip, the same one my buddies and I loved to go to, for excessive noise and resulting
loss of milk production. The dragsters on Sunday afternoon were so upsetting the milk cows their production was clearly down. She won, and the place was shut down.
So, you'd better not upset Bessie or the piper will be paid.

As seen in that movie, I'm glad that head bolt terminator is used. Seems a lot more humane than the kosher killing I've witnessed with the sword. Need to shut down the nervous system as fast as possible to prevent pain.

25 outside and that's the high so far snowed till about 2:00PM or so 8in on the ground some sleet for good measure then freezing rain before getting warm enough to be all rain tomorrow high of 47. Two more cold spells maybe two more snows then spring around mid March if my tea leaves are correct.

Got lower half of driveway cleaned then sleet light freezing rain made 12degree slope unmanageable slid backwards about 30FT time to come in

Coyotes are really not manageable the more you kill the more that appear and they are smart learn our tricks and adapt to our ways

Poured my 1st cup of coffee this morning, and set it down on the railing on the deck. It froze before I could pick it up again!

So I went inside and looked at the outdoor thermometer it read -37ー yes that's MINUS.

Nice day, though. Sunny, no clouds. Nice view out onto the frozen lake.

Later: Sister-in-law called and said that the weather report said it was -51C with the wind chill. Holey smokes - that's almost -70 in Fahrenheit! Never seen that before.

Check, What was the temp without the windchill factor?
