Dave --did you live in Maine during the great ice storm of 1998? In Bangor we had a couple inches of rain that froze and then a couple feet of freezing rain that took out the power for a lot of people from a couple weeks. Not sure to the degree it hit the western part of the state but it was quite an event for us. Good thing we had a generator and plow truck.

We did, but we lived down in Wells where the ice storm didn't happen. The bad areas started about 25 miles north of us. The '98 Ice Storm is one of those unforgettable weather events. I still remember pics of the high voltage transmission towers up in Quebec that looked like Godzilla had stomped on them.

and to plant a little seed of mystery, my seriously artistic (in a Grandma Moses type of way) brother in law is working
on an avatar for me. Haven't seen the final product, just the sketch, and yes it has my tractor in it. And an apple tree.
But there will be something in there you will have never seen before. He he.
My BIL may be CEO of a large medical think tank, but at heart he is a serious artist. He drew pictures constantly for my wife during her 7 year cancer fight, always cheery, always on the fridge or hospital room wall. I still have a few of them and they are priceless to me. So when he agreed to draw an avatar for me, I knew it would be interesting. And creative.

ok, being adults, not kids..., picture an orchard scene with my tractor next to an apple tree with the
front end loader up in the air next to the tree, but wait, the front end loader
is actually me. My legs and feet will be going out I suppose to pick apples...My arms part of the FEL
arms. I have become my tractor....
This was his idea and I went whoa, way cool.
So I hope to get that for Christmas.

...return to work 1/5/15...maybe I better tell the Mrs. ;)

I have been debating this same question! When do I tell the (ex)wife I've gone back to work? :D

My boss is a friend whom we worked together in Oregon in the 90's at Intel, and he went through a devastating (in so many ways worse than mine) divorce a number of years ago and he is extremely supportive of my divorce related crap. For example he is allowing me as often as possible to work from home Wed. mornings so I can keep my visitation schedule (I get the girls from 8-1pm). So they do not know I'm working yet!!!!

LOL!!!

On a side note, I really hate it when I cannot sleep due to coughing and runny nose! Good Gravy! I woke up at 3am and only after 2 benadryl could I go back to sleep at almost 5am... I dozed until 6:20...

Off to get the girls. I will swing by the office for a couple hours after I drop them off.

Be well all,
David

33F & fog this morning. Rain & 37F forecast.

I'm working on a crock pot of bean and ham soup using a package of Bob's Red Mills 13 bean soup mix and the meaty bone from a ham butt I roasted last night.

32 heading to 54 and sunny. Last night's fog froze on everything early this morning when the temp finally hit freezing point. Had a hard time getting my rain gauge open for daily CoCoRaHS reporting and the outside was thick frost.

Dave, talking about custom avatars, who drew your portrait in your new one? :)

Good morning, 34F this morning and temperature is predicted to be the same this afternoon.
Wife is better and heads back top work today, glad I didn't catch what she had.
I take my son and grandson every Tuesday to a Junior C hockey game in a town called Essex. Last night they gave away turkeys and hams, and my son won a turkey. Thought we were going to have ham for Christmas but son said he was going to see if his wife will wip up the turkey too.

LOL Actually, Alfred's image has quite a history.

Alfred E. Neuman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neuman's precise origin is shrouded in mystery and may never be fully known. A comprehensive collection of early Neumanesque images can be found in Maria Reidelbach's comprehensive bestseller, Completely Mad: A History of the Comic Book and Magazine (Little, Brown, 1991). Mad publisher Bill Gaines gave Reidelbach total access to the magazine's own files, including the collection of Neuman-related images that had been assembled for legal purposes at the time of the Neuman lawsuit. The earliest image that she cites is an advertisement for Atmore's Mince Meat, Genuine English Plum Pudding. She wrote that, "[d]ating from 1895, this is the oldest verified image of the boy.... The kid's features are fully developed and unmistakable, and the image was very likely taken from an older archetype that has yet to be found."[9]

An older "archetype" has since been found. The Atmore's advertisement is a nearly exact duplicate of an advertisement for the Broadway play, The New Boy, that debuted in 1894.[10] An example of the advertisement was published in the Los Angeles Herald (December 2, 1894).

"In words that may just as well have been intended for Alfred E. Neuman," the paper reported that the, "comic red-headed urchin with a joyous grin all over his freckled face, whose phiz [(face)] is the trademark of the comedy, is so expressive of the rollicking and ridiculous that the New York Herald and the Evening Telegram have applied it to political cartoon purposes."[10] Elements of the plot of the play explain why the character has adult and childlike features, why the character is dressed as he is, and how he may have lost his teeth.[10] Coincidentally, or perhaps not, the original New Boy image was published with a two-part phrase that is similar in tone to Alfred E. Neuman's, "What? Me Worry?" catch phrase. The catch phrase for The New Boy, was, "What's the good of anything?湧othing!"[10]

The New Boy advertising image was copied widely for use as advertising for "painless" dentistry advertisements and other uses. It is also possible that the image influenced the look of The Yellow Kid, the 1890s character from Richard F. Outcault's strip, Hogan's Alley. The image was used for a variety of purposes nearly continuously until it was adopted by Mad Magazine.[10]

Alfred E. became the standardized full-face portrait we know from Mad Magazine in 1956. That was the work of Norman Mingo while in his 60's.

[I"]When Al Feldstein took over as Mad's editor in 1956, he seized upon the face:

I decided that I wanted to have this visual logo as the image of Mad, the same way that corporations had the Jolly Green Giant and the dog[2] barking at the gramophone for RCA. This kid was the perfect example of what I wanted. So I put an ad in the New York Times that said, "National magazine wants portrait artist for special project". In walked this little old guy in his sixties named Norman Mingo, and he said, "What national magazine is this?" I said Mad, and he said, "Goodbye." I told him to wait, and I dragged out all these examples and postcards of this idiot kid, and I said, "I want a definitive portrait of this kid. I don't want him to look like an idiotæ‚* want him to be loveable and have an intelligence behind his eyes. But I want him to have this devil-may-care attitude, someone who can maintain a sense of humor while the world is collapsing around him." I adapted and used that portrait, and that was the beginning."[/I]

Mingo's defining portrait was used on the cover of Mad #30 in late 1956 as a supposed write-in candidate for the Presidency ... with the slogan, "You could do worse... and always have!"

Good Morning. 1000, sunny, 53F with 76% humidity. Forecast high of 63F with 0% chance of rain this afternoon, and a low of 38F tonight. Haven't had a chance to post the last couple of days. Yesterday started off with showers, but cleared up and stayed in the 70's pretty much all day. A little cooler this morning. I've got to go over to Mamma's to deactivate her old Life Alert thing. The lightning got it and she got a new one, but they have been calling every other day, so I guess I walk over and take care of it.

Margie and I have been married 24 years today. The women deserves a medal.

Hope everyone has a good day,

Larro

Looking into the products from a company called RadonSeal. Look promising, but pricey.
