I got a little more done in my shop today, got another shelving unit onto a caster truck I built. I want the storage, but I want to be able to move it around from time to time.

Post a pic of that, I would like to see that.

Numerous sources WxRisk.com, WxSouth.com are two. I think noaa will modify those maps but warmth will show up off and on for next two weeks before hurricane in Pacific and a sudden stratospheric warming event changes all for us in the east from Atlanta north. Remember this is just an educated guess on my part but a lot of pieces are falling together. This surprise snow next week is just what I said a suprise to a lot of folks. NOAA relies on GFS which is known in winter to have flaws, Euro models are much better. Just my two cents worth

Soooo ... @ 00:15 I get the call ... no heat in the house ... furnace is doing the same thing as before: burners light, burn for a few seconds, and then go out.

I'm beginning to think that these HVAC guys I'm dealing with are clowns ...

33 right now but feels colder....high...well, the high will be 29.

a warm 53 degrees out this morning for you guys sitting in the deep freeze, and zooming up, well, one degree. Even warmer tomorrow and Saturday, then rain, and a dryer cooler period thereafter, so says Wunderground. better start quoting my sources...:D

tile man shows up this morning to start my master bathroom and it should be interesting since the electrician never showed up yesterday to move a heater that had been placed erroneously right in the doorway to the walk in shower. We aren't sure if I need a door yet, am going to try it out, but the entrance is sized so that a glass door will fit right in afterwards if needed. And the heater needs to be moved to the other side of the same stud and all will be well. With the tile guy working around him. Gonna be tight. Not my problem. Until I hear the infamous "Mr. Drew, we have
leetle problem".

never got my haircut yesterday so that's the plan for this morning. And I need to find a vacuum cleaner repair place My nice Miele upright which is so heavy but works so well is kaput. A good friend helped me clean up my old home in PA and vacuumed all the carpeting. And since the furniture had been moved, there was a lot to vacuum. She did not look at the full indicator. And then things went past full. Waaaaay past full.
And still she vacuumed. When it didn't work well it seemed either she or my other friend tried to get the plate off the bottom, and did not succeed. Well they did succeed in rounding off the heads of the three screws. How in the world they did that... So I can't get inside the thing, it's absolutely jammed and hopefully they will not have to send out to Stuttgart to get three new little screws.

I did treat myself to a new vac in the meantime, but not an upright. I use the Makita cordless battery system, plus Craftsman C3, and Makita now has a pretty cool cordless canister vac that uses the same battery pacs. Little tiny wheels on it so it will roll over, but the suction is about twice what the stick vac has and not far from the now clogged upright. And a visible container they want changed at one third full. Has a shoulder strap too but that won't work with my neck for sure. Should be good for bare wood areas and carpeted stairs to second floor.
Haven't used it enough to really tell, but it's fairly quiet and not very heavy. And really has suction. So far all good. And a very high quality hose with a nice contoured handle.
are you asleep yet?
Not quite like getting a new tractor implement but gonna have to do...:D

30F now couple more degrees will reach highs for today, dropping mid teens for tonight.
That's 2" snow mix w/freezing rain yesterday sure made interesting ride to work, six cars slid into ditches that's before main drag, going home last night fog thick in place 5mph - 10mph fast enough and freezing roads..2 more fresh ditch slides.

Thursday can feel weekend in the air. :)

Enjoy the day all.

wow. Like the kind of stuff I had to go out into as a volunteer fireman in PA. Because folks sure seem attracted to those ditches...or the bushes, or the trees.
so easy to spin out if you get your tire into the mess in between the ruts, particularly without awd/4wd.
Thomas you are clearly a good driver, be safe.

Sounds like the flame detector is defective. It is a safety shutdown feature that cuts off the fuel if it "thinks" there is no flame after ignition.

Flame sensor. When one does that it's the flame sensor not talking to the computer. Some are electronic others are a special metal that when burnt produces very small amounts of electricity so small you won't find it with a meter. But the computer can find it. Other thing is since it has set it may have drawn moisture. Get it running for a few cycles and see if it will heat up and dry out. I'm not an hvac guy but I only own 25 gas heaters.

31F & sunny today. Still headed to below zero tonight. Friday is supposed to be sunny too; two sunny days in a row!

Farmer2009 how is the new bull looking?

The cable guy will call today. Our 10 mbps service is only delivering 2-4 mbps most of the afternoon and evening which is messing with our evening Netflix streaming. Sometimes it is below 2 mbps. We've been watching Jack Taylor, a detective theme series set in Galway, Ireland.

Yup ... and it's eating up my firewood supply for the shop ...

Drew,

We almost have at this point ... way too much in sunk costs ...

Couple years ago we were having trouble with it ... they scoped it out and found that the heat exchanger was bad (cracked I think) Turns out it was a known problem wih these units ... and Rheem offered free replacement (parts only) ... well, I think it was still over 6 scamolians just for the labor to do it 'cause they practically had to tear it all the way down to do it.

Last winter I'm out on the road and the wife calls: no heat ...

So supposedly, it's a bad blower motor .... another 6 to replace that (different company this time)

24 hours later: no heat ... turns out there's a short in the wiring ...

This summer I start running the AC ... after a couple weeks it won't come on anymore. Bad controller board in the furnace ... it's not supplying 24v (?) to the AC unit outside to close it's 220 relay ...

I dealt with that by locating where the 24 volts was present on the board and jumping it to the line to outside AC unit ... manual AC ... just flip the on/off switch on the furnace.

So when the chilly weather rolled around I knew there was a good chance the controller board would have to be replaced for the furnace to work. And it would be needed next summer for the AC to operate normally.

So back to the original guys (that really aren't the originals - the company was bought out by someone else since the heat exchanger was done) ... they go with the controller board ... probably because I mentioned it ... that was four bills.

The unit ignites ... runs a couple of seconds ... and then shuts off ...

So last night they replaced the gas valve ... almost 5 bills ... and it's still doing the same thing ...

I've come to the conclusion that some of the HVAC guys out there do not know how to properly diagnose and troubleshoot one of the products (furnaces) that they are supposed to competent in working on.

It's kind like taking your car to a shade tree mechanic ... they might be able to fix it ... if you'll just allow them to change out enough parts based on their WAG's ...

It's like they've never heard of a frickin' diagnostic tree ...

Its made from stainless, before you replace it sand it down gently with steel wool. Its located the opposite side of the igniter.

I'd laugh my azz off if that was it.

Yeah ... I pulled it and cleaned it at the start of the season ... it had continuity at that point ... but it's an intermittent problem ...

I don't recall having a spec to know whether it was in range or not.

Given the minimal cost, that's probably the first thing these 'tards should have replaced.

Here's some data:

The unit has a draft inducer on it ... it had a small reset-able breaker/red button (high limit switch ?) on it ... sometimes - but not always - it will trip and has to be reset.

Rarely, the unit's igniter would come on and it the furnace would call for gas and the burners either wouldn't ignite at all or there would only be a small flame at the first burner.

There is disagreement (between two companies) about the quality and character of flames coming out of the burner: one says they are "lazy" (and that's bad apparently) ... the other company says (on this particular furnace series I think): they're all like that.

I have yet to see the current company that's been working on it pull out a meter and check anything.

I cleaned it with a wire wheel in a drill back when it first started acting up, a month or so ago.

It didn't look particularly dirty.

Other thing is since it has set it may have drawn moisture. Get it running for a few cycles and see if it will heat up and dry out. I'm not an hvac guy but I only own 25 gas heaters.
The unit has run multiple times over the last several weeks ...

Last night after he installed the gas valve, it ran long enough to bring the temperature in the house up from 63 to 72 ... but sometime after that initial cycle it would not relight.

The amount of heat required to do that should have dried out anything inside the combustion chamber/burner area/heat exchanger ...

   / Good morning!!!! #27,358
One other data point: the guy had to pull the gas tube going to the burners to replace the gas valve ...

Apparently one of the orifices for one of the burners was crudded up enough that he got out his Leatherman and was digging at it.

Ya, the draft inducer (a squirrel cage fan on my propane unit) has to develop enough vacuum to close a solenoid before ignition can happen, and if the vacuum is not maintained enough to keep that solenoid closed after ignition, it will cut the fuel off.

That squirrel cage fan assembly for my furnace is over $300! My issue turned out to be a bunch of weed seeds and a small herd of dead mice blocking the air flow which prevented ignition via the vacuum solenoid, and if it did manage to ignite the blocked flow would cause the overheat sensor to cut the flame after about 30 seconds.

Good luck.

26 this morning and damp, supposed to get in the 50's later, but I'm not convinced.
