RNG, remember the old saying, familiarity breeds contempt. Buddy riding like that near his home had probably ridden that route so many times that he could do it in his sleep. That is the 'familiarity' part of it. The contempt comes from the speed he was travelling at.
I don't blame you for taking it easy. Hitting a deer on a motorcycle is not good for you or the deer.
Back in 1998, there was a guy on a Harley hit a moose outside of Parry Sound, ON. The moose was okay as was the Harley other than a little bit of road rash but the rider was dead as a doornail. I guess he was haulin' azz.
