Good digital camera

I have a bad habit of hanging on to old cameras way past the point where I could have sold them for a reasonable price. In SLR format I still have my 20D along with an even older D60. Also two 5Ds, 25D Mark IIs and one 5D Mark III. I'd like to give the older units to some younger family members in the hopes that they might enjoy photography at a bit deeper level than just point/shoot. Not to say I don't really like my point/shoot cameras of course!

I appreciate all the suggestions. I checked every one of them out and am still researching. The Canon PowerShot S95 is at the top of my list so far.

I've had the S95 for a couple of years now. Great pocket camera with quite a lot of creative control. Very high quality lens and photos. I often leave my DSLR at home. If I am not mistaken, the S95 may have been superseded by the S100

Thanks IslandTractor. I just did some serious reading of reviews on the Canon S100. The S100 is a S95 made a little better. No matter where I looked at compact cameras Canon seems to top the list on the compacts. The S100 is in my price range and I appreciate your experience and excellent advice.

takes real good up close photos it is a Samsung S700 which at the time was only 70 bucks and is probably a lot less now several years later.

I agree. There are many nice digital cameras out there and many have more zoom or other features than the S95/100 but as an all around pocket travel camera it is very hard to beat the 95/100. Just a very well designed and built camera that takes really excellent photographs while allowing a good amount of exposure control. Very happy with mine. Get an extra battery.

I used to have a small, carry in my pocket digital camera similar to this one, but have found that my cell phone takes great pictures, it's smaller and I always have it with me. The quality of the camera in the better smart phones is amazing. Now I cant imagine buying another camera to do the same thing my phone does. I just wish it would do what my bigger SX30 does so I didn't need to carry it around.

I have a Panasonic Lumix FS-18, it is an 18-1 zoom (optical) and does a fantastic job for the money. I have had this camera about 4 years now, so the model has been replaced. It has given no trouble and takes fantastic pictures and the zoom is great. Got a closeup of a grizzly from about 100 feet away at Glacier National Park when the camera was new. Still going strong. Battery life is excellent too. Based on my pics, 3 other people bought the same camera. The price back then was right around $300. I think it is only an 8 megapixel but the newer ones are probably more.
