Can anyone recommend some good book(s) for self education in hydraulics.

J.J.: Maybe you want to weigh in on this as you have recommended that PT owners educate themselves in hydraulics. You must have done the same.

I'm not so much looking for theoretical stuff as practical information. The theoretical stuff is readily available on the net. I'm a retired electrical engineer and hydraulics is very much like electricity at the math level.

Amazon has some books on the subject, but it is hard to tell if they are any good.

A free on-line book would be swell if such a thing exists.

A search of this forum returns too many results, so I am just asking the experts.

Thanks,

Ron

The military have some good training manuals for hydraulics. I have about 10 hyd CD's from various places.

I do have to tell you, that it is not easy trying to remember all the stuff one reads and sees at my age. I have to go back to the CD's and books to refresh my self. I try not to make mistakes, but I am sure I do at times. I don't mind being wrong either, as I learn something from knowing the correct answer. .

Thanks everone for the fast response.

mmurphy: I just ordered Industrial Fluid Power Volume 1 from Amazon (used, for $9.98 + postage). It looks like the whole series can be had for little money.

kennyd: I've read the Army Manual, it was very basic. I'm looking for something a bit more 'in-depth'. But thanks for the suggestion.

J.J. & mmurphy: I can't remember if I had breakfast.

kennyd:

I looked at your pictures on reusable fittings. I'm not sure that I understand exactly what you are doing there. Does this make a screw-on fitting? Does it hold the pressure as well as the crimp-on fitting?

They are for making your own custom hoses, and they do indeed "screw" onto the hose. They are a little more bulky than a regular crimp on fitting. They hole pressure as well as a crimp on-at least for me they have so far.

I've been off the Forum awhile---getting stuff together for cross-country move in August....sooo this reply is definitely a day late, hopefully not a dollar short.

John Deere Publishing is a fantastic resource for all manner of technical publications. They have at least three books on Hydraulics. The one I found most useful is from their "Fundamentals of Service" series, entitled Hydraulics: Compact Equipment. Another in their FOS series is simply Hydraulics.

If you follow this link: www.deere.com/publications, you can download their latest catalog. That link is on the right sidebar of the homepage. You'll find not only hydraulics but a treasure trove of offerings, from fasteners to soil management and beyond. Prices are reasonable, too.

tradoc,

Thanks a bunch! I had no idea that JD did that. Looks like a real treasure chest of information. I'll give it a try.

tracdoc good to hear from you again. Did you sell your pt 425? If so have you bought a different tractor? I put solid tires on the finish mower and they work well. I haven't used it all that much as we have another mower but it works well for mowing under my walnut trees. If I ever have trouble out of our other mower then I have this one to keep things going until I get the other mower fixed or get a new one. My wife likes to do the lawn mowing and she prefers using her craftsman lgt mower even though it is slower.
