I'm thinking about welding up a 7' long clamping unit for door rails. Think 1/2" threaded rod is ok for the clamps?

so are you thinking of a 7 foot long piece of all-thread, or just a shorter piece at the end? If it is just a short piece, I think half inch would be fine. If the all-thread will be 7 feet long, I think half inch will just bend. I am not quite sure what exactly you are wanting to build from your post, but if it is just some long clamps, why not just get wood working pipe clamps, and put it on however long a piece of pipe you need? something like this?

I need to clamp up 7' long door sides with maybe 10 clamps on them. Like a series of 6" c-clamps along a 7' length..

What about going to harbor freight and getting a bunch of 6 inch c clamps, probably cost less than making them, and they are handy for welding.

Yeah, I've got a pile of them, what I'm thinking of making is like an angle on the bottom that's flat, put the first board on it, glue, another board (veneer or whatever), then run down the row of clamps with an air ratchet.

edit.. there's probably a name for it..

For clamp material, I'd use ACME threaded rod. No. Wylee Coyote doesn't use this to capture the roadrunner.

You can get it fairly cheaply from your local fastenal store...Nuts as well. It's much better than threaded rod, and worth the extra$ you will spend.

That's what I was wondering Mark, but what's the difference, it doesn't slip? lasts longer?

For starters, it advances(screws down) a lot faster than threaded rod, and it won't back off from vibration or pressure. But mainly, it won't strip when pressure is applied, and it doesn't wear out with continual use.

Acme thread is a much stronger thread than the common threads you see on bolts. Acme is used on vises and clamps in general. It is a very coarse pitch square cut thread vs the much finer V-cut thread on bolts.

I'm still not sure what exactly you are trying to do, but I would agree with Mark's advice to use Acme vs regular if you need threaded rod for making custom clamps.

Get threaded black pipe at the local big box, then get some threaded unions that allow you to thread them together. Then get the bar clamps at harbor freight.

Cheap, quick, and you can break them down and use them as shorter clamps if you need them

And your right, can't have too many clamps, though I am close.
