Thanks for all the discussion and suggestions. I am not that handy with anything auto electrical, but can handle most of these ideas. Will give them a try.

I seriously doubt that you need the glow plugs at all in 'Bama. My DK45 starts without waiting for the glow plugs in 20 degree weather.
However, the wonky connections are a concern by itself. It really should be working properly...

I believe you'll find starting is quite difficult without at least a little glow (maybe a second). If you don't believe me, unplug your glow relay and give it a try. My DK always starts just fine (even on cool days) if I turn the key straight from off to crank. I know that my glow plugs are energized during crank. When my key switch went bad, it failed to provide glow power while cranking and the engine would not start unless it was spinning fast when I released the key; then the engine would sometimes "catch" just as the glow plugs came back on.
