Gearbox grease instead of oil

check the fill plug.. some of them have a lil 'cap' on them.. which covers a hole in the plug.. cap will be sheet metal.. whereas plug is a pipe plug.. etc.

If it does not have a vent, I have drilled a 1/8 inch hole in the filler plug and then inserted a cotter key to mostly block foreign material out. If you dont put the new seals in, you will need to drain all the old oil out and try something like "gun grease". It is sorta a jelly consisinity and cant run out. Many disc mowers use that type lube. Ken Sweet

sandman2234. On old macherny, that won't hold 90 oil, it's a comon practis to use 120 oil, also called liquid grease. If that come out fix the seals, or what is causing the seals to leak

I changed the output seal last night. After removing the input shaft guard I didn't see any leaking around that seal, but the was a path running from the side to the front which had me fooled.
Still no sign of a vent, and the fill is a pipe plug. No sign of a drilled hole either. David in Jax

previous owner might have lost the original and replaced it with a solid plug.

I might cross drill the plug at some future point, and then drill a hole from the inside to intersect that cross drilled hole, to keep down the direct flow of dust into the mower gearbox. Adding a cap over that might not be too hard also, but I think I am just going to check to see if it is still leaking next time I need to use the flail mower.
