GC2400 Questions

I am considering a GC2400 for mowing and some loader/landscaping work around my 2 acres. I was looking for some input on how this machine would be for mowing (quality of cut, how rough it is on the turf)? I would be getting turf tires to minimize the impact but I have been reading some other posts about how some tractors are tearing up the lawn while mowing (not GC's but just in general). Also any opinions of how you like your GC's in general would be appreciated.

I was going to get a set of industrial tires for my lawn instead of turf tires because my yard is so steep. But after using the AGs that came on it, I canceled my order. I am pretty picky on how my lawn looks after mowing, and I can tell you this, I have used the AGs on wet turf and dry, each with no permanent damage. I have a ditch I mow that stays a little wet and it will mark the ground and sink very little. But now since I have used the machine for a month that is the only area I have any turf damage, which I am going to take care of with some 4" stone. I love the traction the Ags give with, IMO, minimal damage to the grass.:thumbsup:

If you buy one of these machines DON'T TRUST THE PARKING BRAKE ON HILLS, without blocking the wheels.

1*I would recommend any of the BXs JD2305 or The GCs.
2*Great just like the others I mentioned above.
3*None of the Sub Compacts are hard on turf even with Ag tires.
4*You would be giving up traction and gaining little if any minimizing of impact.
A big mistake in my book .
5*Thats never been a problem with any of these

6*I've never owned a GC but i love these BXs.

Thanks for the info. LBrown59, I'm glad you said something about the tires. I was thinking of R4's but was afraid they would be too aggressive for my application.

Wacky, thanks for the heads up. I actually read of your troubles on this site. I am sorry to hear about it. How are the repairs coming? I am sorry it happened to you but I am glad you shared with everyone here. I always use the parking brake on hills with my lawn tractor and never think twice about doing so. I am sure that if I didn't read your post I would do the same with the new tractor.

Chuckd, the ONLY complaint I have is that the woodier grasses do not get cut too well. That was also true for my 6' finish mower I previously used. I have considered hooking up the old finish mower and cut with both simultaneously.

Anyone tried using both PTO drives simultaneously?

I went turf and never looked back. I don't have a problem with traction and my lawn never gets cut up even in 4 wheel drive. If this is really a big issue, buy both sets of tires.

Tire selection depends on how hard, or soft, hilly, or flat, your lawn is. And how much you care about soil compaction, and the quality of your lawn.

If you only have 2 reasonably flat acres, and are going to be driving all over it, your choice should be obvious.

Unless your going to do a lot of work using ground engaging equipment like plowing dirt, and or running around in the mud, turf tires will be fine.

When the golf course mowers are using anything but turf's, I'll swap mine out.

My yard isn't too hilly. There is an upper acre and a lower acre with a moderate grade in between. My JD lawn tractor makes it up with no real issues as long as I'm not hauling a heavy load. I foresee a fair amount of loader work and grading with a york rake. That would be the reason for getting the more aggressive tread. I'm still on the fence about getting the basic tractor or the TLB. Not sure I have enough digging to do to justify the added cost when I can just borrow my neighbors, I just don't like relying on him all the time.

Another question, this is the first time I've looked into theses tractors. Is it normal to see the free attachments and 0% financing or is this the result of the slow economy. I had it in mind to do my usual thorough research and buy in the spring but if the deals won't be there I may have to move on it by the end of the summer. That would be horrible...

One good reason to get the backhoe, is the traction you get from having that weight on the back.

I don't use my backhoe a lot. In fact, I rent a trencher half the time, when I do need it. But, I sure like having it on the back when I plow snow. :thumbsup:

I've been extremely pleased with the way my GC cuts with the 60" MMM.

Mine came with turf tires-- the only recommendation I'd make is to be sure to use 4WD when negotiating inclines; it'll keep it from slipping/skidding on the way down, and prevent tire spin on the way back up. Avoid inclines altogether when the grass it wet.

The turf tires also have proved to be just fine in the winter when snowblowing.
