I needed some storage in the garage and looked at the metal cabinets at Lowes. It would have cost around $1500.00 or more.

So I spent $150.00 on 2x4's a couple of sheets of plywood and hinges. Went to the farm and got some 100 year old barn wood, tin and a old cabinet, window, and built what I wanted. Plus I saved $$$$$.

Holy Cow!! That is GORGEOUS!!

I've been wanting/needing to build something for my clothes in the bedroom (SWMBO "needs" most of the undersized closet in our bedroom) and was thinking about something a little more refined. But I think I'm going to steal your design concept and go for that rustic look. We live in a log home, so the style will work well for me.

I'd love to see some more pictures of how it looks on the inside.

Looks very nice. More like something that belongs inside the house, not in a garage!!!

I've found that for garage storage, I like open shelves the best. My memory isn't what it should be, and it's important to me to be able to glance at the shelf and know what's there, or what's missing.

Mark,

Have at it on the design. We like rustic also and I have a lot of this wood available. I lightly sanded the boards to show more of the saw marks and just used clear poly. The cabinets are 8'tall and 12-14 foot long. I don't have any pictures of the inside but it is just 3-4 plywood shelves. If you were to open the doors you would see the sheet-rock. I screwed a 2x4 frame to the wall so if I ever had to move it it would be easier and skinned it with the barn wood and have plywood behind the tin.

Each unit, large cabinet, floor cabinet, and window unit is attached so I can remove one unit without having to remove all of them.

Eddie, I agree on having things out where I can see them and have other shelves like that for tools and stuff. This was odd and end things in the cabinets plus a couple of things I did not want people to see. In case they wanted to borrow them:D.

Test your finish in an area that will not be visible later or on a test piece!

I got a bunch of nicely silvered roughsawn boards for porch beams, and just sanded the whiskers off to bring out the saw marks and make them nicer to handle. When I went to apply poly to them, all the remaining silver dissolved off (I could tell because it all ended up on the rags) and left them a dark greyish brown, with the saw whisker highlights. I still like the look, it just wasn't what I was originally aiming for. As the finish has dried and aged over several months, it has lightened just a tad, too.

Thumbs up! This gives me ideas for some barn doors I need to repurpose. Thanks for sharing.

Nice build.
But I prefer open shelving like Eddie said.

I've over 17 sections of pallet racking, most 9.5' wide, 44" deep, 10 foot high.

Helps me keep stuff off the floor.

And 10 sections of it was bought at $10/section for the 6 beams, 1 uprights AND wire plus an upright for the end :)
