Snow yesterday morning, rain in the afternoon and today. Snow is melting fast.

I don't plan on painting the underneath side, nobodies going to slide under it to look at it anyway. Plus, rust can be a rust preventative. Bluing on a firearm is just an advanced form of rust. As long as it is kept oiled and dry it won't rust more. I will just spray a bunch of oil under it and it will be good to go.

I will spray it several times this week then let the paint cure for several days. Then haul it home and install the turret, ram, knuckle and head. Then I will start on the knee next. After that, the saddle and table. Shouldn't take more than another couple months.

Maybe some day I will put heat in the shop but it isn't that big of deal to me until it gets below zero. It has an overhead oil heater in it but I had the oil tank removed a couple years ago. Natural gas is plumbed to the shop so it is a matter of converting the heater to gas. Maybe someday when I get old I may need the heat.

You criticize the lack of mountain scenery in my pictures? I looked and looked in your pictures for a hint of a mountain, couldn't find one. Couldn't even find a decent hill. You must have been busy with your tractor, knocked them all down.

I looked for some pictures showing more of the mountains but I don't have much. Here is what I could find.
IMG_1009.JPG Putting up a swing set for the grandkids, shows the east mountains. These top out at around 9,000 to 10,000 feet.
IMG_1072.JPG This one is at work, shows the west hills.

Wow Reb you have some beautiful country!!!! It's so different than around my house, I'm lucky if I have 10 square feet of flat ground or can see 200' before trees, I can go about a mile down the road and get a little view, nothing like yours though. Heres a couple pics from last month during a small snow storm off my deck from same-ish spot, 1st is more S.E. and 2nd is more East.

Couple more months is ok if theres nothing else to do, by then I should have my lathe up and ruining, the race is on. Lets see if I'm following this right I'm counting about 8 parts so far, the base is being painted now and wasn't it the turret the other part painted with the name? Do all the other parts get painted also?

I can see where a person could get lost there, thick trees with no mountains to orient too. Each area has its good points and bad points.

Here are some exploded views of a Bridgeport Knee Mill.
BP Base Exploded View.png#3 is the knuckle, #8 Ram, #78 Turret, #68 Column, #39 Knee, #32 Saddle, #16 Table.

BP 1HP Drive Exploded View.pngThis is the step pulley drive system my mill has.

BP Quill Housing Exploded View.pngThis is the lower part of the head which contains the quill and feed mechanism.

The knee is the only other part to get painted. The table and saddle generally don't get painted but they get enough oil on them so rust isn't a problem. I have to admire what the old timers designed here. They covered a lot of complex operations but kept it simple enough even I could reason it out.

Now I'm getting the idea, I took the test and scored a 100!!!!!!! I never thought I could do that could on a master machinist test.

You done good but if we were grading the penmanship...... well...... never mind. :mischievous:

You may have shamed me into painting the underneath side of the column. Or maybe you didn't. The only way you will know is when it is done, you can come here, lift up the skirt and check for yourself.

If I had gone that far with restoration project, I would at least knock any loose rust scale from the bottom, and then spray with Rustoleum Rust Converter. No more rust, and protected from future rust.

After last Thursday night snow I got power back last night, internet back on today 11:00 AM or so, Saturday was a perfect time to work in the shop but the only power I had was in the house from a not up to par generator.

Spring snow storms raise havoc with the power grid. Glad you are back up and running. We had a couple inches last night but it is mostly melted now.

I took a picture for you but I知 on my phone and don稚 know how to post it. Tomorrow.
