Has anybody ever galvanized their tractor?

We use our 1820d on the beach a lot. The sheetmetal started getting rusty, so I sent it off and had it galvanized. It turned out great.

I'm having the wheels for the turf tire kit done next.

Has anyone else out there tried this? If so, what kind of service life did you get out it (unpainted)?

Mind me asking what it costs to have a tractor galvanized? :licking: any pictures?

It was $100.00 to have the fenders, floorboards, and engine side covers done.

I don't know how to post pictures from my phone. I can post pictures Monday off my PC.

I'm interested to see the photos. That is a clever and effective treatment for the sheet metal. I wonder how difficult it would be to install a sacrificial anode system, probably dragging a grounding wire or something, to protect a machine that operates in or near a salt water environment.

I like it, are you going to paint it now or leave it be?

We plan on leaving the sheet metal bare.

I like the loader so far. I thought about having it galvanized as well. I would like to add a grapple later, but I don't like welding galvanized steel.

Very nice! That 1820d looks really sharp with the galvanized metal on it.

Keep an eye on the radiator. The salt air helps speed up deterioration of the cooling fins on the radiator. That was my experience with fleet vehicles in Hawaii.

I took the radiator off and painted it when we did the sheet metal work.

The rims for the Hoye turf kit are off being galvanized. I'll post more pictures when I get them back.

Interesting rust prevention idea....not too expensive....great look and.....if the tractor ever breaks down....you could always use the metal for rain gutters!
Nice!!!!

I think this is a great idea. I LIKE the look, should be durable and heck, you couldn't have even had a decent paint job done for the same price. Did you have to do any prep (paint removal, etc) before you gave them the body parts or did they do everything?

I had to sandblast everything down to "white" metal.

The galvanizing outfit then dips the clean metal in a pickling solution, then into molten zinc.

Small holes can become plugged up with zinc. Anything threaded must be chased with a tap later. You also can't have any un-vented air spaces in the metal.

When I first got the sheetmetal back, it was bright silver like rattle can chrome. In the picture it has faded to a more respectable gray.

I'd like to do the deck on my bush hog..... I'll have to look into whether or not anyone does it around here.
