Hello im new here and new to Kubotaç—´. I just picked up a 94 Kubota g1800-s with 540 hours for free from an older gentalman down the road. He told me that 4 years ago he was mowing with it and the motor blew up. The Kubota dealer told him that it would cost 3000 dollars to replace the motor. So he got a new Kubota. I got it home and started taking it apart and found that the drive shaft to the hidrostat was broken. The question I had is has any one heard of a drive shaft braking and over rev the motor enough to blow the motor? If I take the drive shaft out can I try and start the motor or do I need to fix the drive shaft before starting the motor? And if the motor is good what should I do as a tune up ? what is the going price for a low hour unit? Thank you for any help.

Doesn't sound like it's the engine that is the problem but who knows. Is it gas or diesel?

DmansPadge: the G1800 (and it's 18HP sister the G1900) are both Diesel. The -S means 4-wheel-steering.
The G1800 has a D662 engine, the G1900 a D722.
Does the engine start?
Remove the remaining driveshaft first, and start it up. The governor on the engine controls the speed, and even with nothing connected, it should not over rev.
The driveshaft to the HST should cost you about $200.
If you do need an engine, these occasionally show up on ebay, and bid for anywhere from $500-$1000. You should be able to use either the D662 or D722.
The G1800/G1900 are great machines, so even if you need to put an engine and driveshaft in, it might be worth it if the rest of it is in good condition.
