FX24 - hard shift in top range

The tranny on my newly acquired FX24 works fine except that in in high range (3) it upshifts hard. The gear selector moves easily, but there is a definite thud going from 1st to 2nd gear. Downshifting (2nd gear to 1st) is smooth and easy.

I should add that I've only noticed this when pulling a 5' shredder, PTO engaged. We're rained in for a week or so, so I can't test the tractor without the shredder for a while.

Operator error? Or, something in the tranny I need to look into?

I would check for a bent shifter fork.

if you are not using an overrunning clutch on the mower, it will make a powershift shift hard

Are you talking about "shifting on the go"? No reason to do that on a tractor.

Yes, Norm. I'm "shifting on the fly." My operator's manual implies that is the the preferred method - clutch for range changes and PTO (tractor stopped) and gear selection without clutch ("on the fly"). If I've misunderstood this, I'd appreciate your input...and I'd be more than happy to write this off to operator error.

I have the FX235 Patt and when I change up or down when I'm brush hogging it happens to me, I'd say it's normal. OK in low revs as in when driving normally though.

There's just no reason to "shift on the fly" on a 5-8mph tractor. If it were mine I wouldn't do it, especially if it causes problems. Be mindful, that ops manual was written by American users, not by the Yanmar factory.

The overrun clutch might be the answer. I'll check with John47 to see if he uses one.

How 'bout it? Do you have an overrun clutch on your FX235?

It's the old, "If it hurts when you do that, don't do that," huh? Well, I think that's pretty good advice. Until I learn diffrently, I think I'm gonna give up that extra 1/4 mph.
On the other hand, it's still raining. Maybe it's time to dust off the tools and get better acquainted with the Powershift tranny...

The Powershift in my 2020 does that. It will leave 2 black marks on my drive shifting from 2 to 3 in high range and wide open throttle. I'd rather have it like that than slipping when shifted.

If any of you guys are using a mower without an overrunning clutch on your yanmar, its just a matter of time, and you will be shopping for parts to repair your favorite toy.

Power shifting on the fly is ok if you are going SLOW, if you slam that shifter while its revved up, you will be shopping for a new ring & pinion gear for the rear axle.

We have repaired over 12 ring & pinions in the last 8 years, and believe me I never know where I will find the next one. (tuff to find)

We parted out an FX24 3 years ago because the owner did'nt want to wait & we could not find one for it fast enough

an overrunning clutch is cheap insurance !!
