Fuel Rationing??

/ Fuel Rationing?? #21
run into both problems.

fill up vehicle. fill up a couple regular gas cans, then i also need to fill some diesel gas cans.

by the time gas cans are filled up and then getting vehicle almost filled i can hit a limit.

then when it comes to diesel , i generally have to go to another pump at the station even if same pump has a combo gas / diesel option. and then sometimes i still need togo inside or i choose to hit another gas station.

if i go to say a distributor for off road diesel it can be a different story. but regular gas stations that see majority of there business as regular gas for run of the mill vehicles. there limits can get rather annoying rather quickly.

one thing i tend to avoid is gas stations that are busy maybe a cent or 2 less than some other gas station down the road or have some restruant mini grocery store. i will pay a couple cents more. due to more likely i will need to go in and ask for pump to be reset so i can continue to fuel up. 10 plus minutes wasted time waiting around or pay a couple bucks more for gas. paying a couple bucks more for gas wins the battle fairly quick for me.

=============
granted i have 300 gallon tanks for both gas / diseal. thing is, i don't have cash on hand to fill them. the gas prices are still way to high more so this time of year. they will go down some more and if i can wait it out i will wait till correct time of the year to get them filled. tends to be 2 times a year were gas prices get lowest around here. and that is when i tend to wait for. it is rather hefty cost to fill tanks. but long haul. that buck more a gallon can quickly pay for it self.

actually as i think of it. this is about right time to start filling the large tanks. crops are in, so farmers are not as heavy calling on fuel, and it just about time or is time for folks to start breaking out all there smaller tractors for landscaping and like. if i can get it right. in between above. gas prices can be down a good amount. till fall comes and a 3 weeks before holidays start up.

The local station I USED to fuel up the truck set the limit to $50 or less. The last time I filed at that station I had to swipe three times. The cashier blamed the credit card company so I called them. The CC said they do not place a limit, it is the gas station. I do not see that it is in the CC's best interest to have me swipe multiple times but is sure is for the gas station.

I only go to that station now to fill up the five gallon jugs fro the tractor.

Another station I used to go to did something similar but then switched back to a higher amount at least on the diesel pumps. The station I have been using is a bit more money but they let me fill up the truck without walking into the store twice or using a zillion credit cards.

A new station has opened that is a bit out of my way but not much. They were about 15 cents cheaper than the cheapest gas. I am going to see if they have a limit on the credit cards.:D

Most of the dispensors around here have the limit of $100.00 posted on them. Right beside the 10% ethanol sticker..

That's why I like my local gas and grub stores. Drive up, fill up however much I need, and go inside and pay. Gas or diesel.
Then go over and get a good ol' greasy cheeseburger all the way!

While that does have some advantages of avoiding the cutoff limit, I hate standing in line while someone tries to make up their mind on a half dozen different lottery tickets and all I want to do is pay for my fuel and get out of there.

Might have been mentioned before as I did not read entire thread, but back in the day when we were pumping 150+ gallons of gas into the boat to go fishing, we would pay with CC inside and didn't have to stop. I think the limits are for swiping at the pump.

Can you do that without going inside first to pay, or leave a credit card or such? I know service stations had a number of "drive offs" that failed to pay for fuel in the past, but then some of the clerks found that if they came up short, they could just call the police and report a drive off theft for that amount, and of course they never had a license number or much of a description of the person or vehicle. So I think a lot of police departments quit even taking a report or anything else unless the clerk has the license number of the offending vehicle.

I seldom carry much cash and even having cash in hand is a problem...

Most if not all the Gas Stations in Oakland will not accept any bill larger than a $20 unless they clerk knows you are a regular.

I used get all my gas from a little Korean Owned Union 76 Service Station that also did repairs...

One day, he was trying to mount a new strut compressor machine on the wall and say he was having trouble... I opened my truck and walked over with my Bosch Roto Hammer and had all 4 holes done in about 2 minutes... made a friend for life... that is until he sold the business and moved to Oregon...

He was always there and when I pulled in the pump was set to let me fill and then I would pay the total... extremely convenient.

In recent weeks, I have fueled my vehicle, with diesel, paid, with my credit card, at 3 different stations. The pump, automatically turns off at $90.00.1* Anyone know why?
1*This is a result of the stations policy and has nothing to do with Fuel Rationing.

+1

if you get annoyed by the pre-authorized amount pick the button that says "pay inside" (if you have the option) and the pump will not kick off at a pre-determined figure.

I just put over $100 in fuel in my van in one pumping (28 gal) the other day, i used "pay inside" and had no issues with the pump cutting off early.

That's the amount they pre-authorize since they don't know:

a.) How much fuel you intend to purchase
b.) How much credit you have left on the card

It's programed into the point-of-sale system that runs the pumps, and varies by gas station. When you swipe the card, they create a pre-authorization transaction that essentially tells the credit card company to place a hold on that amount against your card.

The place i go has a 200L limit for fuel.

No limit on pay at the pump as im regularly over $100 for a fill up:mad:

I have to fill my 2011 F550 atleast once per day, sometimes I have filled it 3 times in one 24 hour period... anyway, with our fleet managed fuel cards, there is no limit set by the issuer.
At some random gas stations, the pump will shut off at $50, $75 or $100... I usually try and avoid these stores in the future since i'm only allowed 3 transactions during a 24 hour period.
The shutdown is being utilized to generate another 3% charge for ANOTHER transaction. Not sure whos doing it, whether its the store owner, the cc processing company... but I believe its just another way to generate some extra revenue....
Same reason soft drinks USED to be sold ice cold out of the coolers, now they're just cool...

/ Fuel Rationing?? #33
My first experience with the transaction limit was when I worked at the car dealership years ago...

Part of my job was to gas the vehicles and sometimes I would make a dozen trips just in the morning... that all stopped when the credit card transactions were limited... the Dealership decided it was too much trouble and had a pump installed...

Somewhere there are marketing guys dreaming up ways to increase sales and then you have others that impede sales... in a perfect world....

/ Fuel Rationing?? #34
I just swipe the card again until I am full, never have I heard of a limit on transactions in 24 hours. My card is used for everything I buy because carrying cash around Baltimore MD. is not good practice.

now that i start thinking about it, possible reason for dollar amount limits...

i have had to wait a few good minutes. as the clerk, wrote down info about a drive off and wait for them to call the cops. talk about a pain.

if ya think about it. electronic stores generally have those magnets or like on products. so if you go through door and the item did not get scanned the alarm goes off. once electronic stores go things down other stores started doing this. now i find more and more stuff come with something already within the package and the individual store does not have to stick something on each product individually.

gas stations on another note: someone can easily pull up and drive off, there are no "door alarms" that go off. just cameras, and the clerk/s.

===============
what bugs me, is that you would think gas stations would start to allow an automatic more amount after going to station so many times within a certain time period using same credit card. vs setting just a flat rate for everything.

in all honesty, i am kinda surprised folks have not started doing "driver license" scanning.

/ Fuel Rationing?? #36
Just wait until the new debit/credit card fees go into effect. Probably have to swip four times to fill a 12 gallon tank.

That's the amount they pre-authorize since they don't know:

I used to hit the $75 limit all the time when fueling my truck, then they raised the pre-authorized limit to $100, which I still occasionally hit. If you have a commercial credit account with the oil company, or you use a fleet payment card, the limits are much higher to allow for fueling large vehicles.

I was wondering this as my loggers truck drivers have credit cards to fuel the trucks up when there out and not able to get to the shop. They get 100 gallons to fill up!

One of the stations I used to use set a limit on the CC so low I had to run the card three times. The same station gets quite a bit of dump truck, medium duty box trucks, and some semis. They do not have a problem filling up on their company cards. Very frustrating to have to scan three times. I track my mpg so getting three receipts means I have to take time to add up the final price and number of gallons.

I just do not go to that station anymore.

That's another new one to me. I have a Visa Debit card from my credit union and it's never been used except for cash at ATMs. I'm not sure now, but I think I used it once 2 or 3 years ago.

How in the world do you get money then?

How in the world do you get money then?

We don't use a lot of cash; use credit cards instead (and pay in full each month, of course, so there's no interest to pay). And since we use the Discover Card most, there are places such as Walmart, Sam's Club, and Kroger's where you can ask for cash back when you pay. So even if I'm only buying $5 worth of groceries or something, I can get $60 cash also. That avoids ATM fees. I do sometimes wonder just exactly what kind of deals they have, but awhile back Walmart quit giving cash when you used a credit card. Sam's Club and Kroger's did not quit. Then Walmart started again, and I even got a flyer in the mail from Discover Card to use your Discover Card at Walmart and get cash at the time. Since it's about 20 miles one direction or 39 miles the other direction to one of my credit union's branch offices, I don't often go there, but it I happen to be in that neighborhood, I'll stop by and get some cash if I need it.
