Bumped into an old buddy today at the J-D dealer. While we were discussing the affairs of the world, he mentioned a problem he's been having with his couple year old 997 zero-turn mower. Going down hills, it freewheels. Returns the handles to the neutral position, but it won't stop. He's crashed into his fence once already and is worried about ending up in one of his ponds at the bottom of one of the hills. He said it did it took off again last night and he had to set the parking brake to get it to stop.

He said the J-D guy looked at it and told him there's 'too much air in the tires' (!!!)  . Any ideas?

Try another dealer's service and see what they say.

It depends on if the big z is sliding or actually free wheeling. If the wheels are sliding down the hilllowering the air pressure to 12 psi will help stop that. It gets more contact patch on the ground. Simple science. If it is free wheeling then someone needs to pressure and flow test the pump. Tell the dealer to get off his butt and fix it before someone gets hurt! Ok I'm done now sorry.
