Free Virus Protection

I've been using Free AVG with no problems for several years, but recently, when I try to update it, it gives me a box saying there's a problem, just as it finishing downloading. So I can't update it any longer. I ran a virus check, also by AVG, and it found a virus that was preventing the downloads...the origin of the virus...AVG!!!! Did they create a virus that stopped their free system from downloading, so that you have to buy the better one???

Since I don't want to play that game, I want to switch to another free virus protection. Can anyone reccommend any good ones? And can they be download with dialup? I can't get satelite reception where I am, and we don't have cable or DSL lines, so dial up is all I can get.

I just updated AVG's free version on one of my windows boxes with no problem. I don't know what got into your machine, but I seriously doubt it really came from AVG. They make their money on their pro version. Their reputation is everything. What you are describing would trash it.

Something else got into your machine or you have some sort of file corruption. I'm afraid you have some work cut out for you to find and fix it. Good luck. I hope you can find it before you lose data.

TBN members had recomended Avast so when I got my replacement laptop from HP I installed that instead of going back to AVG free edition. I can't say exactly why but I like the Avast much better. Hey good luck!

the origin of the virus...AVG

I also doubt it came from AVG.

Something that might work would be to uninstall AVG and install another temporary virus program and do another system scan.

I've been using NOD32 for 2 years and have been pleased enough to continue using it.

They also have a free 30 day trail.

What version of AVG do you have? They made a BIG upgrade some months back and older version no longer supported. I'm currently running ver 8.xx

AVG 7 is no longer supported. I got the same error and then upgraded to the new one AVG 8 and all is well.

i use AVG ON BOTH MY MACHINES and i have no prolems as of yet, but they are the newer versions

I'm using AVG 7.5 (I think). I tried to upgrade it, but it wouldn't work. It still asks me to download upgrades. I'll try to upgrade to the new free one again. I'll post how that works out.

I think you have to download and install the new version, not do an upgrade. It's been awhile, so I don't remember. The instructions should be on the AVG site.
