Back in the day the IGA stores had a little publication called the IGA shopper, where you could submit free ads. It came out every Tuesday, and it was common to grab a stack of them and divvy them up at work for later perusal, and you'd have to read the whole thing, which was often 8 pages, as there was no categories or editing of any kind. //
There were a couple of local publications like that. WantAdvertiser had categories, and was very good for used cars and equipment.

There was a similar publication in Maine called Uncle Henry's.

Always highly variable experiences. We were selling a minivan and the first guy who showed up test drove it, said the radiator was leaking and the transmission was faulty, and offered me $2,000 below asking. You should have seen the look on his face when I told him that there were seven people waiting in line to look at it! The second guy bought it for the asking price.

Bought an 8.5' dinghy for boat show price of $630 one season. Decided I wanted a bigger one and bought a 10' in June. Put the first one up for sale the week before 4th of July, after all the dealer stock had sold out. $800!

Has anyone ever cancelled a sale when a bunch of people responded because maybe it was priced to low?

I had a fireplace I sold at what I thought was a fair price, but I had a bunch of responses and the first guy took it no questioned asked. Sellers remorse?

No. If I get the price I was asking even if maybe it was too low than I still sell it.

People really are messed up. Many are only interested in new listings and figure if it's been on there a while, nobody wants it or not at that price and so they aren't interested either. You loose a lot of interest in your item if you start with a high price. It's a real catch 22.

There is a saying "Your first offer is often your best offer" and I have often kicked myself, that I didn't take a first offer.

I set a price based on what I want for it. Oftentimes, as when I sold my snowsled earlier this winter I am glad to see the item go to somebody who will use it, rather than taking up space in my shed, collecting squirrel crap. Conversely my sister and BIL were house shopping a couple of years ago and made an offer on a home. The realtor got back to them a couple of days later, laughing but also apologetic. He said that for the first time in his career, the owner had thought about the offer then decided that she wanted more than the original asking price.

I have a jeep I listed this week on CL and the first response was a scam. :) No surprise there. I post high to begin with and always hint at a lower price for no BS. It rarely works, but it's free. I use GuerillaMail and usually state right in the ad that I only meet in a public space (usually a walmart parking lot nearby).

So got another couple of low ball offers on my mower - less than HALF what i'm asking...So I asked 'why are you wasting your time and mine with this stupid offer' - "400 is better than nothing, isn't it?" (I'm asking 850).

WTF?

I'm in no hurry - lots of interest (3-5 msgs a day, every day) but the weather sucks - thursday 2" of snow, sunday (tomorrow) 6-10" of snow then 5 days of sub 20F temps..I don't expect anyone to buy a mower right now. in 3 weeks when the grass begins to grow - yep.

Maybe I should unlist it ...

I probably would wait to list. Alot of people look at craigslist legitimately for something they need that's what I do. There's also alot (I know a few) that have plenty of money, dont need anything, but browse and make lowball offers just as a hobby. They get alot of great deals.

EXACTLY! It doesn't hurt to try. Sometimes I respond with a higher price than I was asking. It's just funny, because you usually only get those low ball offers on new listings. Also, sometimes when people give you a lowball offer they stress CASH. Like, I was going to take woodpecker scalps!

I was looking for something today. Nice when people take pictures of a nameplate so blurry, you can't read it.

I stopped to check out a truck for sale on the side on the road one time and older gentleman stopped right after me to look at it. I forget the asking price, but the other guy said that he just sold that truck to a young guy the day before. Said that he was asking what it's listed for right now, but the young guy gave him such a story that he felt sorry for him and let it go for a lot less then he was asking. Seeing it for sale right away made him feel like he was taken advantage of. I felt sorry for him, but I also thought that he shouldn't care what was done with it once he sold it, just that he got his money for it. But I also understand being lied to.
