Question as I only have a tractor with a vertical exhaust stack.

Do forward exiting horizontal exhaust system found on many cause the operator to breath in lots of exhaust fumes?

I have a forward pointing vertical exhaust on my open station Kubota M6040. Never bothers me. Sorry - just noticed you are asking about horizontal exhausts. I would guess they are not a problem either. But take a look at the picture of mine. Vertical with a tip that directs the exhaust gasses horizontally. Whatever - in use the exhaust gasses are never noticeable.

Thanks

I am tractor shopping and the reason I asked is the owners manual for my new to me Alamo SHD96 Flail mower says one cannot have an under tractor exhaust that exits to the rear.

Some of the tractors I've looked at have underslung exhaust systems, but I think they could be reversed and run forward. However, I have not run a tractor with a horizontal forward exiting exhaust.

I have a MF 135 diesel with the exhaust exiting downward under the left rear axle. We’ve been using it for almost 50 years with a rotary cutter and a flail a bit. Unsure of what the issue might be using a flail. Other than getting ‘gassed’ when hooking up an implement. I do prefer the front horizontal exit on my Kubota for that reason.

last tractor 82 Kubota L295DT had an under tractor horizontal rear exhaust, which would fume me out.
New LS MT240HE has horizontal forward exhaust, and I never notice it. Maybe it's because it is 39 years newer, maybe because it is Tier IV, either way it is a non-issue.

I'm confused dieselscout80. What is the supposed interaction between a rear facing horizontal exhaust and a flail mower??

A thought hit me. I wonder - is your flail mower OM saying this because they expect you to connect the mower while the tractor is still running? Are they concerned that a rearward pointing exhaust will gas you? With my extendable 3-point arms - I never need to connect anything with the tractor still running. Besides - tractor OFF is the only truly safe way to make connection.

OOSIK, in the Alamo Owners Manual in the "Hazards section" and its sub section of "FIRE PREVENTION GUIDELINES" in of the owner manual it says "DO NOT OPERATE mower on a tractor equipped with under frame exhaust" and that is all i know.

I wonder if the exhaust exits on the left rear side if the heat could effect the belt life of the fail mower?

I never hook up while my tractor is running.

I wonder if it could be - they are worried that hot sparks from the tractor exhaust could cause mower dust or dry mowed grass to ignite. Since it is in the Fire Prevention Guidelines section. Maybe the hot exhaust pipe igniting mowed grass as you drive over it.

It can very well happen. Mostly with the newer tractors with emissions, when it starts the regen process.

We have had big fires starting because the tractors started the regen process during brush mowing in forests with dry brush.

The early Grey Fergusons, and later Massey Fergusons 35, 65. 135 & 165s that some had the exhaust horizontal going out the rear, were usually referred to as `orchard tractors`

My US built Deluxe 135 is not the orchard or vineyard model MF produced here but I can understand the reference. A vertical exhaust stack can be just a little problematic under trees. My Kubota is the first I’ve had with a ROPS. Popped my first wheelie early on mowing under a mature pecan tree.

I wouldn't notice any fumes due to a cab, but the front (and slightly downward) facing horizontal exhaust pipe does kick up chaff and whatnot while mowing. I think it causes me to have to stop and blow out my coolers and radiator more often.

I would rather have a vertical stack coming out of the hood.

I have a John Deere 4100 with forward exhaust. I have a blade on the front and when I use the rear mounted and rear facing snowblower, I like to have the wind blowing from front to back to keep the snow off me. In that setting I smell a lot of exhaust. I keep thinking I should build a vertical extension on the exhaust for the winter.

I have a New Holland WM25 with forward exhaust. I breathe exhaust, yes, and I HATE it. I keep thinking I should build a vertical extension, like Sno said. My previous tractor, a little Kubota, had a vertical stack and I was perfectly happy with it. Yes, it could catch tree branches, but I have a ROPS and canopy anyway, so it wouldn't be any more of a problem than they are. Besides, they're my branches, I just cut them down if I'm going to run into them again.

I run one tractor with an underslung exhaust, horizontal discharge under rear tire.

I really hate it to be honest.

You get gassed hitching if you leave it running
You stir up a cloud of dust in dry going
You risk burning something up with hot exahust.

Only two good things is you have an unobstructed view looking forward and no stack to catch on tree branches.

For the original question... forward exit horizontal exhaust....M5640SU has this for sure, nice little tractor, but that feature and the small fuel tank were negatives to me on that model.

Almost every lawn tractor is forward exit horizontal exhaust.

I hadn’t thought about our lawnmower‘s forward exhaust.

My JD 2025r exhaust exits near the front of the tractor and to the left. You get fumes at times but not anywhere enough to bother me.

My Massey 2605H had a vertical stack, I put a rear facing pipe underneath. I use the tractor in the woods, now I don't have to watch for low branches hitting it, and sad to say the tractor sits out in the weather and I was concerned about rain getting into the engine. The only tims I regret the change is when the ground is dusty, then it blows it around. I also like the look of the tractor better without the pipe poking up towards the heavens.

I’ve had to repair many a vertical mufflers. Branch and grapevine magnets. Could feel the heat in an open station tractor. Not bad in winter, not so much making hay in summer.

The older tractors I had some underneath rear discharge. Not 3pt hookup friendly. Easy to damage in the woods.

The newer tractors are front horizontal. Seem to keep the heat and fumes away from the operator. Not prone to snag. There is a spot you don’t want to linger off the tractor usually permanently marked on the FEL.
