I have Ford 5000 that was working fine last fall. It was on summer fuel and during the winter it was run by someone wanting to do some snow blowing. I put some additive in the fuel and as it was still far too cold and there was a hard knock and the engine wanted to stall out. Oil level was fine. I decided to turn it off and leave it off till the weather warmed. There was a leak at the reservoir that goes to the glow plug. I replaced the hose and clamps and bled while cranking till all four cylinders ran well but the hard knock near the back of the engine is still there...it's nasty. Any guesses? Could a valve out of adjustment cause such a noise?

No glow plugs, but does have a thermal start aid..

Tight exhaust would burn then miss, not knock so much.

Have you isolated a cyl by loosening injector lines, being careful to stay away from pressurized fuel?

Does killing a cyl stop the knock?

If you can isolate a cyl, I think id look at that rod cap.. If no iso, then rear main. More than a couple possibilities on a knock

Thank you so much for the reply. Yes, cracking the injector lines...1,2,3 the engine stumbles.. crack 4 (closest to driver) there is no difference. The engine was stalling out..but now on all four runs but seems louder. Almost alarmingly so. I was told that water could have worked it's way down the exhaust (tractor parked outside) and that could slightly bend a rod...so then it wouldn't be opening the exhaust properly. Someone suggested an oil pressure test to check for bearing wear.. at this point...I think it's going to have to go to the shop.

The rod that would bend when a cyl is hydrolocked is the connecting rod, not a pushrod ( those bend fine too! But for other reasons, like stuck valves )

If it is knocking and has no cyl 4, its going to need some advanced tool diagnostics. Lil comp test.

Dont bother with op, unless you saw the low op light come on.

I'd say she's ready for the shop. A miss is one thing, head gasket, etc.. A knock is another, that's lower end, not up top..
