Ford 1710 steering shock replacement

Think again. Or just check one of the online parts lookups. Nobody is claiming a 1920 has a steering dampener. The discussion is about a 1710, which does.

I was simply asking a question: "A Ford 1710 tractor has a steering dampener?"
And then (since the 1920 is the bigger/newer brother) making a comparative observation.
Seemed like a logical question/comparison to me.

I finally got a chance to drive her tonight without the dampener on, seemed to drive the same as it did with the shock. Tire might have had a bit more wobble with the lack of stiffness that the shock might add or might have been my imagination too. Part shows to be $200 on one parts site, gonna try napa tomorrow to see if there is one cheaper that might work. I push so much brush & brush piles with this thing that there's a good chance I'll break the new one too.

I have no clue about a 1920, but I do know my 1710 has a dampener. I'll see if I can find a pic. After looking at the pics on the net, it seems that about half of the tractors did not have the dampener, so I'm guessing it was an add on???

Well, there is no cross reference number for anybody that ever searches and reads this thread. Original or nothing, I'll check eBay now.

I tried to get one at Napa for my 1710 with no luck, my advice would be to straighten what you have or maybe modify a shock from a Ford Ranger?

Mike you made me take a look at mine today in garage-mine has no damage-but I'm sure after 30yrs it is doing nothing, wonder if a guy could just measure closed position and extended position and match it up at part's store? I know they make aftermarket dampner shock kits for stuff like jeeps, as long as it closes and opens enough it would work (if it will attach) let me know what you come up with, would not mind changing mine, Thank's
By the way just bought my 1710 also and can't find a PTO cap anywhere.....

I don't recall a way to install a pto cap, I do have a shroud for mine; but I don't think that's what you're talking about is it?

As far as the steering dampener I tried a few auto parts stores and they said the connecting rods are smaller than most trucks. I was staring at my dodge trucks dampener earlier and I think it would be easy enough to fabricate something that would work. Truth be told, I've run the tractor about 5 hours and I don't really notice anything different on the steering, maybe since I leave it in 4wd full time I don't notice anything different.

Mike, ya I bet it wouldn't be much making 1 (dampner) work, I found a PTO cap yesterday and ordered (used), good luck on shock, let me know how ya do it, I think for long term I would want a working dampner on it, this spring I'll look at changing mine out (30yrs old) can't be any good..

Is there any way you could post a picture of the bracket that attaches your steering cylinder to the chassis? My neighbor's Ford 2120 is missing the bracket and I'm trying to locate a replacement.

It will be a week or so before I can post a picture. I'll try to remember.
