I let a rock roll down the pile and hit the stabilzer cylinder rod on my backhoe. Something I tell my son not to do a dozen times everytime he gets on the machine.

What is the best way to deal with the ding so it doesn't ruin the seal?

I smoothed the rough edge with a file and was thinking of using JB weld to fill the divot, and smooth the epoxy with a file after it cures.

Any thoughts?

Can this be fixed at a hydraulic shop?

I doubt JB will stay in place and could get in the hyd. system and do some damage before getting to the filter. If it is a shallow ding polish it smooth and expect to get some leakage. I think it will eventually damage the seal or the leak will start to spray out when the ding gets to the seal.
You might call a shop and get their opinion.

Assuming you filed it so nothing is sticking up, sand it with some 600 grit paper and oil and live with it. It really should not be that big of a deal, certainly nothing that I would be concerned about if it was mine. We have several cylinders with that type of thing, it takes a lot of use before any seals would have to be changed.

Just my :2cents:

If you have filed it nice and smooth it will be fine shouldn't leak a drop. Check that the rod doesn't have a bend now.
