Had this rattler try to hitch a ride in the Gyro Trac today. We are working on a road widening project and the guys from the DOT told us to be careful because they were around. We've heard that a lot but never seen one. Rattlers just aren't that common around these parts. So when they found one they brought it to us to prove they were serious.

Wow, that's what they call a timber rattler or some call it a cane break rattler. Easily identified by its tiger striping. Where you find one, there will be hundreds. Be careful and where chaps.

Yep, we've got chaps with us in case we have to get out of the machine in the brush for any reason. This was in Morven, NC. I have heard that they are pretty thick around there but this was my first encounter, it was the second day on the job so I'm sure there will be more over the next several weeks.

When I lived a few miles south of Morven as a child, I can remember all the fuss about those rattlers. I even remember one guy lost his pinky finger trying to pop the head off of one. It seems that he grabbed it up by the tail and when he brought it back before slinging it foward, The rattker latched hold to his pinky and the doctors had to remove it.

By the way fish, I've never eaten so much fruit.:licking::licking:

Considering that you probably leave your equipment onsite overnight, I think I'd sure check everything out well in the morning before starting. There's no telling when one of those critters might be coming to set up residence around your nice warm engine when the weather cools at night. That's a beauty of a rattler, but he sure would be messy if he was caught in a fan or belt.:p

Had that same exact thing happen to me once.Went hunting off my atv, parked it in woods.Get back ,get on it and as I'am driving through woods I start hearing a hiss sound coming from what I thought was a vacuum type sound coming from fuel tank.
When I jump off to see what it is.I had a cottonmouth on motor between my legs giving it a ride. :(
By God's grace it did not bit me.Took me a while also to get him off my atv.
Then I sent him to snake h@ll. ;)

Thats a nice snake we got a 54in water moc the other week on a job. He had been living back in this swamp just eating. We thought it was a small gator because all we saw was the middle of the water moc.

Yeap, be sure and check your trucks too. My father rode with a moc in the cab of his truck years ago. Parked in the woods, worked all day, went home and when he got up to leave early the next day, he saw the moc curled up on the floor sleeping. Came up through the trans shifter because the boot was old and not sealing.

Wow! I'd hate to reach into my minnow bucket and find that critter. Moccasins love to sneak into minnow buckets and have a feast.

My brother got a small Cane Brake rattler a couple months ago here in South Louisiana. We went from seeing NO rattlesnakes around here, to seeing 4 in the same area within the last 6 months. We can't understand why this is happening...

What part of louisiana, i live in prairieville outside of baton rouge and the only poisonous snakes i've seen on my property are the occasional copperhead. My nephew lives next to the bonnet carre spillway in montz and they have a healthy population of rattlesnakes
lately he says.
