FACE CORD ?

That is a new one on me? I have been around wood cutting all of my life, but had never heard that term so I had to Google it (**** what did we do before Google!). a cord is a unit of volume that is 4' x 4' x 8' I have always heard 1/3 of a cord or a 1/2 of a cord.

I guess with a "face cord" you would also need to say what length the wood is cut to 12", 14", 16", 18", or 24" as that would make a big difference.

Right. A "face cord" is a somewhat meaningless term. It could even be a full cord if you were buying 48" logs. It's about as precise as a "truckload", LOL. I once called about an advertisement for a truckload of wood and asked how big the truck was. The gal replied "Oh, it's a big truck, it has a lot of gears":eek::eek:

I don't burn much wood, but my favorite method of moving it is just pick it up.
So what do you do with this long piece of fire wood, just stick one end in the wood burner or fireplace and leave the other end laying in the middle of the floor and keep pusing it into the fire as the end burns off of it?:D

Around these parts a full cord is 4'x4'x8' a face cord is 4'x8'x16" and stove cord
is 4'x8'x12". I like the pallet fork idea I'll have to look into that.

And if you feel short changed, (like you actually stack between 2 posts exactly 8 ft apart) and find a mere 3 ft in heigth they say that it is a metric cord!

Or you point out that 90% of the wood is only 14" long and not 16" they tell you to bring it back! (about 14-15% 'short change')

Then again they charge you taxes and pocket them!

Then they have dry, semi dry and seasoned.
Seasoned is always 'out of stock' and semi was cut last week.

That is why I cut my own firewood.

At $95 per cord, you want to watch out for them tricks.

In Maryland, wood can ONLY legally be sold in cord or fraction thereof. When you see the little bundle of wood available at the grocery store, the package will read "1/128 of a cord". There have been folks in hot water for offering "face cord" or similar nomenclature.

I haul my firewood in the bucket, also. I t is about 150 feet from the processing site to my basement entrance. My wife and I work together so I never really stop the tractor. I fill the bucket which is enough to fill two large wheelbarrows at the basement entrance, then my wife hauls it into the basement and I get the next load.

The tractor also comes in handy for getting the big stuff on my log splitter as opposed to lifting the pieces on by hand

Sayeth PeterC38:
there is 6 cords in the racks which I split by hand w/ a Fiskars super splitter
Good golly - you don't need to burn the stuff to keep warm. Looks like you're getting your money's worth from that MS361 - nice saw.

I have had good luck with a 4'x4' Walco dump box for hauling to the splitter (a big stump, me, a splitting maul and 2 wedges)-

But nowhere near 6 cords. Yet.

Now that is a great approach to getting the big pieces onto the splitter! Great back saver :)

I copied this idea off of someone here.

I have a set of forks for my 3pt for my little 1830. I have 4 sets of pallets to store the wood. Each "pallet", is made up of 5 wood pallets. 1 for the floor, 1 for the roof and 1 for each of 3 sides (leaving the front open). I then wrapped the sides with heavy plastic, then cover the top with the same plastic. It keeps the wood nice & dry. I figure I can store about 1.25 to 1.5 cords of wood. What I love, is that I can leave most of the wood in the pallets in the back, then bring a pallet around to the basement door (closest to the stove) when I need another. Last year was my first year with this setup. I have to wonder how I did without that setup before :)

I store my firewood in a shed outside. There is no entrance to my house near the stove, and all the entrances are up some steps. So, I've built a wood box on wheels. I wheel the box outside onto the deck (the deck is 4 steps up from ground level, so the FEL can reach over the steps), strap it into the FEL, take it down to the woodshed, fill it up, put it back onto the deck, unstrap it, and wheel it into the house, where it sits next to the stove. The only thing I did wrong the first time was I didn't use non-marring wheels. This way, during the winter, I handle each log going into the box, and then the next time I handle it individually, it's going into the stove.

LOL!! I find that a lot of people don't know what a cord is either. I've seen some pretty small piles advertised as a "cord".

Nice guy, make your wife do the manual labor part :D:D

OK, I'll chime in. Here are some pics. The wood is hauled to the house with a small garden cart pulled by the BX2200 or with the tractor bucket. It is stacked on the front porch in 1/2 cord amounts on a 4' x 4' pallet with sides.

The full storage area in the last picture holds 16 cords. It is stacked on TREX decking that was replaced under warranty.

All were split with a TSC 35 ton vertical splitter (easier on the back). The cutting was done with a Stihl MS361, Husqvarna 345e, and Husqvarna 338XPT, with a Husqvarna 51 as a backup.

The first picture shows how a length is held up with the bucket for trimming and making firewood without back strain. The tractor's bucket was very slightly modified to hold the back end of the log from sliding on the back of the bucket when turning or when the log shifted. The tractor is my old L3650 that is now sold. The M7040 does this job with considerably more ease.

Around here people measure the ammount of firewood they have in "ricks" not "cords"
A rick is 8' x 4' and one log wide. Which would be about 1/3 of a cord.
A rick of firewood sells for around 35-50 bucks in my area

thats a good price around here they can get up to 300 a cord.

How do you carry fire wood with your Kubota? Three point carryall, bucket modifacation, forks?

Heres what I came up with. Half a sheet of scrap 5/8 plywood, 2x4 scraps and tie down straps. It more than doubles my bucket firewood hauling capacity.

Shine, I like it. Did something similar with front bucket pallet forks and a piece of plywood.

Shine, good idea. :)

bpattie - if you have pallet forks, what about using a pallet on the bottom (slide the forks into the pallet) with two more pallets nailed on for sides and supported at the top with a board or rope? Just a thought.

Rig up one of those on the front, and one on a carryall on the rear. It would be a balanced load and carry almost a cord total.
