Hey Guys, need some input on rear finish mowers for my 4320! What recommendations do you have for quality, use and value? Looked at Sitrex, Woods, some Italy brand name Cabranni? Don't remember name, but need some input here to clarify what I should be looking for!
Rear discharge, pnuematic tires, 4 point casters for adjustment... whatever else?
Just need a good quality mower for my 4 to 5 acres of lawn!
Thanks

I've had a 60" Befco heading for 4 years now. Other then sharpening the blades, greasing and replacing the drive belt once, it's done a great job. This one is a real discharge unit, so it doesn't leave windrows.

This one has solid tires which have been trouble free. It has 4 casters that adjust for height using spacers.

I got the 60" unit as part of a package with my first tractor. My 790 could easily handle a 72" unit. I reckon your machine could go 84" or 96".

Here's a link to their site.

Rob,

I purchased a Frontier 60" RFM for my new 3720. I have been using it for the first time this week. Frontier mowers are made by Woods, so the comparison would be similar. So far, this mower seems excellent. It is well constructed and very quiet. The gearbox and belt noise is much less than that on my father's 335 Garden Tractor!! I purchased the smaller size for manuverability and hauling purposes, and I also got the side discharge because I did not want the clippings discharged out the back. If you go with Frontier, you can use the I match hitch, which I think is the single best tractor innovation in decades. It makes hooking up and removing the mower a snap. I do know that the Frontier products and the Woods name products are slightly more expensive in most cases than Befco, etc. The constuction seems slightly heavier, although the Befco, etc. are well made. Frontier also markets an "economy" line of rear discharge mowers that also are I match compatible. They have slightly lighter gauge steel in the deck and the gearbox is not quite as long lived. My dealer runs one though on his tractor and has 1500 trouble free hours of use. Aside from clipping dispersion, which I feel is not quite as good, it offers a great cut. So far, my mower cuts as well in most cases as the 62" center deck on my previous X595, and that's saying something. For me, my advice would be to look at a 72" or larger Frontier economy deck, and use the savings to get the I match hitch if you do not have one. I bet you will come close to the Befco in price, and have the quick hitch. I would not look at those other brands, as it they cannot be cheap enough to merit getting them over such great mowers as Woods, Frontier and Befco, and if you are looking at the Woods you may as well get the Frontier since they are about the same. Hopefully this helps some. Oh, pneumatic tires (four of them) and an anti scalp front roller (which does not always come stock) is essential.

Thanks again! Yeah I have to limit it to 72" because of manuverablity issues with trees, but My JD dealer even said he would prefer the Sitrex model over Frontier??? Maybe cost, maybe his profit margin, I don't know, besides he was $275 more than a small tractor repair shop a minute from me for the same Sitrex. When someone tells me its going for 1900, but for you I can give it to you 1800 and I find it for 1600 around the corner, I question his true DEAL, even after buying a 30k tractor from him!!!!

Yeah, but that dealer has a lot more overhead costs to pay for then that small repair shop.

I had both the 72 inch and the 84 inch frontier finish mowers, both were great. The 72 inch model was quieter though. Great mowers, I beat the heck out of mine and it held up great.

Ditto Roy's thoughts about supporting the local dealer. See if he'll half the difference. He keeps a lot of expensive parts sitting on shelves waiting for us to break something.
Where abouts in Mid MI?

Rob, as Roy said, take a serious look at Befco. Their upper quality units are tough to beat, probably among the best quality in the world, the price is higher than many of the other brands but the things are built like tanks and engineered like fine Swiss watches with special gears, anti-scalp rollers, etc. Many other brands look similar, but when I traded in my decade old Befco, the dealer gave me a darn good trade in and then resold it for nearly the price of a brand new First Choice mower.
