I ran my tractor with on road diesel for a couple hours and then refilled it again with on road diesel. It's sitting with a full tank now, is it okay to run it with that?

I have all off road diesel now - I wasn't aware there was a real difference!

On road diesel and off road diesel, what is the difference?

There is no real difference between on and off road diesel and you can run either in your tractor without worrying.

As everyone else has said..... no major difference between the two. A red dye is added to the offroad to show the authorities that the road use tax has not been paid on it. No problem using it in your tractor. No problem mixing the two either .

great thanks guys, i was concerned it was bad for the tractor.

girls behind the counter said it had higher sulfur content, probably just a misconception on their part.

In different areas, the sulfer content may be different. I'm told in my area there is no difference in sulfer content. Either way, you won't have any problems mixing..... or using the two. The lower sulfer content fuel is to meet current on road emissins standards. I feel the more sulfer the better, since it acts as a lubricant. Same goes for home heating oil...... no problems running that in your tractor either. Though there may be some formulation difference between the three...... all are fine to run your tractor on.

Higher sulfer would be good, but because of emission regulations, it's pretty much all low sulfer now. From what I understand, this varries around the country, but here in East Texas, the refinery only makes one type of diesel. Then when they distribute it, they add the red die to the off road, tax except diesel. The only difference is the red die.

What is more important is to buy diesel from a place that sells allot of it. Water will get into all fuel storage tanks, so the longer it sits there, the more likely that it will have water in it from condensation and humidity.

FYI - The red dye is used by the authorities for dipping. They take a sample of your diesel out of your fuel tank. If you are caught using off road diesel in a truck on the road there are heavy fines. The road taxes have not been paid. I have never been dip, but have talked to guys who have been dipped. Once red dye gets into your truck's tank it is hard to get out even after several tanks of non-dyed diesel. Fines can be $10K or more.

You need to drain it out right away. I'll be right down with the proper containers. No charge for disposal or anything. (just kidding of course)
