There is an Industrial Solar installation slated to be installed where I live. The locals against the project started this organization.

Because of citizen action a moratorium on solar was put in place in the county by the county board of commisioners.
But, because of state law and a state commission that's only function is to promote "green energy" and approve projects the local county government does not get a right to deny the Industrial installation.

The Commisioner of Public Lands in our State is hunting for revenue and has a dog in the fight here. The Department of Natural (DNR )resources is one of the major land holders in this install and there is a lease that will provide a good sum of dollars to the DNR.
"Your government at work for you"!!!

We all expect are property values to plumet based on data from other similiar installations.

I wish I could get a solar farm, my tax evaluation went up 50%

Central Iowa is getting new property evaluations from their county and they are all up 15% to 80% because of Covid and everyone is in an uproar.

I bet there is a lot of people wishing for something to knock the new evaluation down next to nothing.

So after the government took my $5,200 and gave it to you, your paying the remaining $13.3k? What a great deal for you.
Did you really not even know that there was a longstanding federal subsidy for homeowner PV (photovoltaic) systems? If you have no idea what is going on with the tax code and energy subsidies than maybe don't worry too much about it LOL.

By the way the tax credit is back to 30% now. And was 30% when I had my solar installed as well, back in 2018. Maybe you'll like this nugget also, my state (michigan) had a state subsidize loan program to provide 0-down, 10-year low interest loans for solar systems also. So I had my $16,000 solar system installed and then the IRS gave me $4,800 8 months later. My ROI is also in the 9-10 range and then my electricity is nearly free after that.

Back to the OP, how do you know the property values will plummet? Large scale solar arrays make no noise, don't creep on your property boundaries, don't trespass, etc. Some people might love to live in privacy nestled between parts of a solar farm.

I’m very aware of them, there’s so many depending on your state and local utilities and how they are subsidized to keep track of what’s what. Locally it’s free depending on sun exposure up to something crazy like 7kw beyond that you pay, but there’s strings.

I very much support solar in most ways, and hydro, and wind. I’m working on my own micro hydro because I feel it’s the most reliable for my situation. I just think it all needs to be paid for honestly and not claim you’re breaking even in a certain number of years when really you’re not because you aren’t paying for the entire system, your just repeating a lie.

I doubt it was your $5200 that they gave to Steve. If Steve is anything like many of us he pays WAY more in federal income taxes than $5200. I think your money was used to shoot down a balloon. :)

I'm a fan of solar energy, but not on good land. It makes no sense really. Utilizing a good resource to develop another is at best a neutral gain. But for closed landfills and roof tops, it makes perfect sense. Both are abundent, ugly, have no other potential use, require regular maintenance, and are located in areas of higher electrical demands. Only makes sense.
I feel the same way about using good land for anything that takes it out of production: housing subdivisions, manufacturing, retail, etc…. But we do honor private property rights in this country, so good farmland is converted to these uses every day.

I’m confused. What does Covid have to do with property tax evaluations?

Some people have got together in one of our communities and are planning on installing a huge multi-acre solar farm on property adjacent to my daughter's and sister-in-law's property. They will be surrounded to the north and south of their properties and across the road. Their property value will go to nearly nothing.

Has anybody fought the installation of one of these?

Any ideas?

RSKY
I'm also curious as to why the adjacent property values will drop.

I ask because a solar installation is planned for a 40 acre parcel adjacent to mine. Due to trees and topography, it won't be visible from my house, so I presently have no objections. Is there something I'm missing??

I don’t think wind farms or solar farms really look pretty but I also don’t think they will seriously devalue the surrounding ground. Like someone else said, there are several things that could be much worse. A lot of counties have wind and solar ordinances.

Through my work as a land surveyor I have worked on several in the early planning stages, maybe 20 of them. It seems like all but one were on fair to good farm ground. There is a reason for this, it doesn’t take a lot of dirt work, tree clearing etc.

There's been some promising research on combining solar panels with ongoing productive ag. It's so-called "agrivoltaics".

An example:
"We find that shading by the PV panels provides multiple additive and synergistic benefits, including reduced plant drought stress, greater food production and reduced PV panel heat stress."

this page has more info: Solar and Agriculture Co-Location

I can understand people not wanting to be near wind farms as they do make some noise and stick up quite a ways, but solar's quiet and low to the ground. Once its installed there won't even be much work on them, mostly cleaning the panels and weeding.
