For digging holes for small trees and shrubs, try a post hole digger, I have seen several nurseries using 3 point post hole diggers with 2-3 foot augars. Good excuse to add some toys, but be careful with this one.

I thought of that but: I couldn't find any to rent around here, they go for over $450 with auger at Tractor Supply, and there are lots of cautions about the danger like yours on this board so I decided against it.

When we built my pole barn we rented a bobcat with a 12" hydraulic auger. It was the only practical way to put down sixteen 4' deep holes in less than two days. And the reverse rotation was a godsend!

I, too, have been thinking of planting and transplanting small trees. Have seen at least one website for a manufacturer that makes small 3ph tree spades, but dont have address. Probably easy to find with a search.
