In comparing specs for different FELs, I see a "digging depth" spec. What is that exactly and how significant are differences, e.g., one states d-depth is 3", another states theirs is 4.9", "when bucket is level" ? Apples and Apples or something else involved regarding the 4.9" qualifier ?

FEL digging depth is simply how far the loader frame, hydraulic cylinders and such will allow the bucket to reach below the plane established by ground contact points of the front and rear tires.

"When bucket is level" means just that. In the level position the bottom of the bucket is 4.0 inches below that plane mentioned above. I would assume that the 3 inches that you mentioned was also with the bucket level.

The cutting edge of the bucket will go much lower (deeper) if the bucket is tilted all the way forward, but it doesn't do a lot of good in digging except to make your first couple of cuts into the soil and breakout the area to be excavated.
