could someone explain the difference in the kubota valve options.

Float detent action allows for free hydraulic fluid movement in either direction (while in that position), much like a loader float (locked foreward). Standard valves push fluid one way or the other, and do not allow free flow either way (no float detent). With standard, flow is pushing, pulling, or allowing no movement of fluid.

So which is the right one to get to operate a drag disc with a cylinder? I assume the floating detent one?
What about a log splitter?
What about a post driver?
a Baler?

The one I have is a standard valve on a L4240 GST. You cannot lock the flow on with the lever, meaning for a log splitter you would have to "duct tape" or "bungee cord" the lever in position to flow. It returns to the middle when you take your hand off it, unfortunately. I'm not sure if the float detent lever operates any differently, other than a locked position for open valve with no pressurized flow (float). For a disc, I don't think you would want the lift wheels to ever float, would you? I would assume they would be all up or all down (transport), correct me if I'm wrong. This could be accomplished with either style valve. The float stye would be nice for anything requiring a cylinder to freely open and close, like for an implement following the contour of the ground or something. It works like the float position (foreward lock) on a front end loader.
