It sounds like you found your problem. Sometimes the act of explaining an issue to someone else clarifies it in my mind or leads to questions I had not thought about before.
Inside the pump is outside of my realm so thepumpguysc is the one to listen to.
I'm betting you can get this little bugger tweaked into running like it should. I've sure learned a lot following your adventure.

Just wanted to update anyone who was tracking this thread with a similar issue. Got a brand new fuel pump this weekend. Installed and re-timed (as best I could, got it in the range and it works so it is good enough). Tractors starts up perfectly. Just bump the switch when cold perfectly. No more smoke at all! Everything seems to be corrected which verified my issue was the replacement fuel pump I had purchased previously. Note to anyone trying to diagnose fuel pump issues - you can take the service cover off to check the fuel rack and free it up if it is stuck, but whatever you do, do not adjust the screws on the fuel rack.
