Okay that was the worlds quickest reply.

Does anyone know what kind of power these PTO's would produce when hooked up to hydraulics? Pressure and flow rates?

Pardon me if I'm telling you what you already know, but it's not the PTO like on a tractor. On a truck it is an access plate on the side of the transmission (or transfer case) that allows you to install a geared assembly (pto unit) that gives you a small rotating shaft to use for aux items. These are usually a hyd. pump that can be used for operating a dump cyl, snow plows, sand/salt spreaders, etc.
In years past they also powered mechanical winches (tow trucks). They have been available for years on most all "vocational" trucks, and kinda faded in PU's as they (PU's) became "yuppiefied" with more buyers picking up the groceries, than a pile of lumber. High fuel prices and the new 15,000 - 18,000 gvw duty trucks are filling in the gap between 1 tons and Med. duty trucks, and have been very popular with contractors by staying under the CDL 26,000. All of these trucks are delivered to the dealer as what is called a chassis/cab, and will end up at an "upfitter" (truck body shop) and have the unit comleted for end customer. A service (tool) body truck might have a generator or an air compressor driven off the pto. I have a 99 F450 with a PTO off the trans. running an intergral hyd. pump for the dump hoist. I even have a '01 F350 single weel PU that I ordered with the PTO access onthe trans. I never used it but it was only a $60 option, so you can see, it;s not new, but maybe gaining in popularity, that;s a good thing. Way back you could get 3pt. hitch and a reg. 6 spline pto at the hitch from the factory on a CJ Jeep!!

you find them on tow trucks, dump beds, etc

All late model Ford F-250's with the Torque Shift Tranny, 2003 1/2 and later, have this option. I have seen a F-250 with a compressor and one with a generator. Nice option to have. I believe Ford is the only one still putting them on. I know GM took it off the Allison a few years back and not too sure about the Cummins powered Dodges.

Standard equipment on all RAM chassis-cab trucks, pretty sure it's available as an option on the 6-speed auto RAM pickups as well.
Tandem PTO Pump Capability
Available Power Takeoff (PTO) capability can run tandem pumps. This, along with the new locking torque converter in PTO mode, allows the All-New Ram Chassis Cab to have even more flexibility in powering upfits, like service bodies with both a crane and a compressor.

In my fire dept., it is used to drive a pump for water. Both trucks are GM with allisons and cat motors. You engage the pump, put the truck in drive (make sure the parking rake is on) and it automatically goes to 5th gear. Once the pump/pto is engaged, it disconnects from the driveline so the truck won't be in gear also. We can pump water over 120psi, which is pretty strong out of a 2" line.

as was said before, these used to be commonly available on all trucks. virtually any standard shift transmission with a cast iron case would have small plates on the sides where a gear drive pto could be mounted. likewise, gear drive cast iron case transfer cases had the same. they became less common as aluminum cases became more common.

if you search ebay or craigslist you will likely find a variety of pro driven implements. in a way it is like a tractor: once you have the pto attachment you can attach most anything to it. i used to have a 75 ford ton with a hydraulic dump body that was powered that way. as was also noted, large winches also were driven off of them. i'm sure the sky is the limit if you can figure out a way to attach the device.

one thing to note: like a tractor, the pto speed is in proportion to the engine speed. many older vehicles had a manual hand throttle to set the speed up. because of this, it's probably better suited for short use items, like a winch pull or dump body. you wouldn't want an application that required you to turn the truck at 3500rpm constantly.

You've got a Dodge C&C with serious issues? Which one?
1994 dodge 2500 4x4 diesel......hate it, but wife wont get rid of it. was too heavy to be sold for cash for clunkers......

I used to have a '99 F-350 with the 6 speed that had the PTO option too. Though I never had a need for it.

Are you guys running a PTO pump, or a midship?

Our engine has both. The PTO pump works off the tranny. For wildland fires, we can pump and roll; we pump to a 1-1/2 hoseline and will drive while a FF uses the hoseline in advance of the enigin(25' long hoseline). The engine also has a midship pump. When it is activated, it does disconnect the driveline; the engine is stationary. We pump in drive gear.

The PTO pump has lower flow and pressure. The midship pump can pump in excess of 250psi, and 1250gpm.

Our water tender/tanker, has a PTO pump only. It will pump in neutral or in gear; you can pump and roll with it. It is lower pressure and flow(off the top of my head about 500gpm).

I think he is talking about a midship.

It is lower pressure and flow(off the top of my head about 500gpm).

Not to threadjack, but if the pump on your tender/tanker is NFPA rated you should be able to pump the full 500 GPM/150 psi per NFPA requirements...

it should be standard equip in my dodge. that way i could pull myself off the side of the road every time this **** truck breaks down

Are you seriously complaining about having problems with a 17 yr old truck...?

:laughing::laughing: it wouldn't work when /if engine was down though.

Well we don't hear that very often, but anything is possible.

I think so too.

I think he is talking about a midship.

Yes, it is a tender in our parts. If you get on the radio and ask for a tanker around here, you're going to get an aircraft... Maybe even that converted DC10 jet...

The pump on WT-28 goes higher than 150psi; just not sure off the top of my head at my regular job...
