Tractor Ernie or anyone familiar with the F235. I've been having intermittent starting problems, but now won't fire at all.

When I turn the key right to 1st stop, I get a click, then when I turn key to start, the engine turns over, but it won't fire.

I noticed before when it was intermittent, that along with the click I also heard a series of approx. 3 sounds and when that happened and I turned to start it fired right up.

I checked all the wiring I could locate and checked the fuses. The far left 5amp fuse was blown. I replaced it. I had the battery checked and was advised it had a bad cell. I replaced it today.

It still clicks once, but won't fire.

I attached a picture of a control I can't identify. Can you tell me what it controls and could it be bad & causing this problem? The voltage reg is a sealed unit. Can it cause this kind of problem?

From my questions I know you can tell I'm no mechanic. Can someone point me in the right directions.

IF all the ground and positive contacts are clean and corrosion free then the symptoms sound as though your starter solenoid has intermittent contact internally. May be dirty or bad. A reliable re-builder should be able to diagnose and make the repairs reasonably (compared to a new starter).

Thanks Mark, now can you tell this newbie where to find the starter solenoid:confused: .

Hi Harry,

The F series tractors have a fuel shutoff switch on the right side, between the fuel filter and the engine block

It's the little motor that makes a winding noise when you turn the key on & off.

Do you still hear the winding noise?
If not, MAYBE your fuel shutoff switch went to heaven.

The first click that you hear is the glow plug timer switch.

Please let us know if the shutoff switch still works.

If it does'nt I know HOYE tractor has one on the shelf, if I dont

Thanks, I found it.

Question: If the motor is turning over, but not firing, would a faulty solenoid cause that?
Not a starter solenoid . A fuel shut off solenoid yes. Sounds like problem lies in the fuel shut off circuit.

Thanks Ernie, You're up early, since it's only 8am on the East Coast.

I think I found it. Does it have a little lever on the side? No, I don't hear it attempting to operate. The whirling sound you mention was probably what I was hearing after the chick.

I just ordered a starter solenoid from Hoye. I'll try to cancel that and switch it to a fuel solenoid if you think that is what the problem is.

You've always been a life saver for many of us F series owners.

I've think Ernie has you on the correct track. When you first said all you heard was a click, that didn't seem correct to me unless there was more than once design.

From the sound I hear, I've always assumed there was a mechanical shutoff operated via an electric motor. Motor sound is heard for 1-2 sec.

Have always asssumed this to be the fuel shutoff. Located aft of the injection pump and below of the fuel filter. Since I've not had any problems, I've not paid that much attention to where this valve is located. This just looks like the can of a motor.

Thanks Mickey, what did we do before digital cameras!?

Could you imagine trying to explain to this "dimwit" what it looked like and where to find it.

Harry, make sure that the unit still plugged in , and that the wire to it just didnt fall off before you order one, a flashlight helps to locate it.

"Those are not available new right now. Most customers just put on a standard pull cable like all of the other Yanmar models. Those electronic shut-offs are very problematic."

This was the response I received from Hoye when checking on the fuel motor. Any problem you have experienced in following their suggestion?

Harry, The one I have is for an f24, it mounts differently than yours

If mine goes on my tractors, I think I will go with the cable

Well.... go buy a cable and get that yanmar a going again !:D:D

THANKS ERNIE, MICKEY & HOYE PARTS,

I found the motor thanks to Mickey and followed your suggestion to check the wiring before I removed it to install a manual shut-off cable that Hoye suggested.

After I disconnected, cleaned & reattached the two wire connections to the motor, I had the most wonderful "whirling" sound and immediately the diesel fired right off.

A great feeling when the problem you have been fighting for a couple of weeks is remedied so easily. Even a dimwit salesman like me can follow mechanical advice when it is so expertly offered.

Tractor people, YEH!

btw Hoye now has a parts manual in English for the F/FX235. It was a big help is finding how the shut-off motor was attached.
