Snowridge mentions that grass will burn on the exhaust, so it does not sound like the muffler shell is running that much cooler than a normal muffler. I suspect the expelled gases might be a little cooler, but the older vintage PTs with the normal mufflers seem to expel the gases to outside the engine cover. I thought the cold air intake was to reduce the shell temperature to reduce the overall heat input in the engine compartment. )</font>

Duane, I've been asking myself the same questions. Since the exhaust is expelled out the side of the engine compartment, what is gained by cooling it a little (or a lot, if that is the case)? I suppose some of the exhaust may be blown back into the compartment, so it may reduce the temperature a little bit. That is the only thing I can think of.

$100? He's right; I don't want it! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Rob, how hot does your muffler shell get? Have you ever had dry grass clippings ignite when you shut down? If not, have you ever noticed them lying on the muffler without igniting right after shutdown?

I'm asking this question to try and determine if my muffler is running hotter than yours. I'm wondering if we just got a bad muffler. I've never seen anyone else mention the dry grass clipping problem.

Yes Duane - Terry said that the cold air intake was to reduce the temperature of the muffler. So that is indeed the intent. I can only assume that the shell would be even hotter if they didn't do that.

Ooops! It's well past tomorrow, ain't it? I can't find a part number on it anywhere.

Here's some links to pictures of it.

From the left side.
From the right side.
The last picture shows the relationship to the battery. I have not had any heat related problems with the battery, or any grass clipping issues. I get lots of grass clippings under the engine, but it has never packed the engine compartment and I have never found grass clippings on top of the engine or evidence of burned material. I hit it with the leaf blower after every mowing or brush hogging use and that seems to keep stuff from building up.

Here's a link to my 8hr maintenance page. There are lots of pictures there that show where the stuff tends to build up on our machine after mowing.

David - that tractor is so clean - I mean it looks new - you must wash it all the time - the picture is dated - I can see the snow

Hee hee... that was taken soon after delivery, very few hours. I was sitting on it yesterday and it looks nothing like that now. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'll give it a good bath as soon as I get a chance.

I'm ashamed to say that my tractor is dirty from top to bottom. Ran the power washer over it last week and then ran it through the mud today. But then it's a working machine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
