Excel Guru\'s

I am trying to copy a cell from one worksheet to another. I know you can do it but can't remember how. I have used the excel help even on the web and when I type in my question every thing else comes up but my question.

I just want to copy within the same file I have two worksheets and I want to take the contents from worksheet 1 to worksheet 2. Can anyone help me here?

Re: Excel Guru\'s

I ussually just hightlight with a left click and copy with a right click [you can do the latter with the pull down menu as well in your edit group on the tool bar].

Paste can right click as well, but if you wan't the values only, you may want "paste special" under edit.

Good Luck!

Murph,
You're trying to copy the whole first worksheet and paste the info the second? Or just copy one cell?

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Good question inspector! Almost forgot I sometimes use "copy sheet". I should have noted earlier that paste special can likely be found in the right click drop down too.

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Just one cell. I have tried the cut and paste but that does not work. I originally thought that was to way to do it.

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Save a copy of the original under a different name and then delete what you don't want!

Re: Excel Guru\'s

For a single cell:

In the sheet you want it copied to, syntax is:
='sheet name'!from sheet cell number

= sign then in single quotes the from sheet name then the exclaimation point then the cell number

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Should work, unless you want or specifically do not want any links or formatting. Then, you'll need paste special to check and uncheck the thing you do/don't want.

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Right Click the cell, "Copy". Then move to worksheet 2 and highlight cell you want to paste to, right click, "Paste Special" and choose what you want to paste.....values, formats, formulas etc. Unless you want worksheet 2 to update everytime worksheet one is changed, then use the instructions posted above /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, it'll update the target sheet if the from sheet is changed (which is what I assumed you wanted to do)

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Inspector,

For some reason that is not working for me. I just did it again using the value option and it does not work. If I copy using the formula value then it looks for the value of the formula on the wrong sheet. I can not get it to update the value only.

Re: Excel Guru\'s

If you right click the worksheet tab (bottom of the worksheet), you have an option to "Move or Copy".
Can you use that to move the worksheet data you need to the other workbook?

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Roy,

It looks like you can only move or copy the whole sheet. The formula above works just perfect. Problem is I won't use this function again for a couple of years so I will forget when I need it again. I just don't understand why that is not a question in Microsofts help section.

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Looks like you did want the cell linked then.

I'm guessing Inspector was thinking the same as I. By using paste special and hitting the paste link button you should get the same "equation" as Brian provided. Nothing wrong with that at all, but I always find "paste special" easier to remember because I can then look at the options I want. BTW, in that equation, you will $ signs if you want to drag that exact value (or without if you want the drag to mimic the earlier page).

Re: Excel Guru\'s

I use Excel everyday at work to keep the guys overtime log correct. I copy/paste formulas, values and formats (any one of them or several) from one to the next when I fill a worksheet up.

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Sorry but I'm slow, are you trying to get the formula in the 1st cell to do the same thing on a diff worksheet with the new worksheet's numbers or are you wanting the value of the original cell to show up in the new worksheet.

If the latter, BC gave it right but there is nothing you need to remember. In your new worksheet/cell type an "=" then just use you mouse to navigate back to the orig. worksheet and select the cell you want to reference and then hit "enter".. All done and nothing to remember. You can even do this for another workbook if you want to reference a cell in another file. After you do it each time you open the new worksheet it will ask if you want to update the reference to the other file.

If the former, copy and paste/paste special is the way to do it which now makes your new cell pull from the same cells on the new worksheet as the old cell did on it's worksheet but the two cells are not connected in anyway.

Re: Excel Guru\'s

Kevin,

That works and is what I am looking for. That makes it realy easy now if I just can remember it the next time. Thanks a bunch!!
