Thats pretty big! Are you filling it solid as well? And issues with cracking while it dries?

We filled the holes that we put rebar in (about every 4 foot). There shouldn't be any issues with cracking as it dries because the footing is really solid and shouldn't shift. We dry stacked blocks inside the colums to hold up the rock cap that the brick man will install.

Not too much new to report. We made a template of the gate out of 2 X 6 and dropped it off at a local metal fab shop for them to build the gates. Each gate should weigh around 400-500 lbs each so we purchased the 3000 lb Elite power hinges so there won't be any sag or trouble later on. I'll post pictures of the gate once I pick it up from the fab shop.

I haven't forgotten about you guys. I'm just waiting for the welding shop to finish the gate. I'll post pictures when i pick it up.
The brick man should be out in a few weeks to do the brick.

Sorry I've not posted in a few months. I was working out of town last month and just started a new job last week. We got the gates back from the fab shop and painted them with POR-15 paint so it shouldn't ever rust. If you remember, we made a template for the two gates with 2"x6"s and gussets to hold them together. After several measurements for the gate width to include the hinge width and 1/2" gap needed in the center for hardware/electric door closure, we ended up with exactly the 1/2" gap that we needed. The gate is made out of 2"x6" tubing and boy are they heavy. I would say each gate is 300-400 lbs each which, along with the openness of the gate should help fight the crazy Kansas wind that we have. The hinges are rated to 3000 lbs/pair so we shouldn't have a problem. We ordered the bricks 5 weeks ago and they are suppose to arrive tomorrow so the rest is up to the brick man to install. On the end columns, we have power installed in conduit for lamps. I'll post a picture of them later. All-in-all, I think it turned out great. We will probably do the gate opener next spring as we are about tapped in the funds department at the moment.

Tell me what you think.

:thumbsup:Man I really like that gate!

I hope to build something like that to replace my two farm gates.

Those are some great looking gates. Rough estimate guess is about 100' of 2x6 RT, probably .120 wall. While the more rounded corners on the steel looks good and makes for a better lasting finish, it does require considerably more fill welding to flush out the joints. Very labor intensive, fill and grind, fill and grind until it comes out even. Excellent workmanship on them.
As for killing the power to the operator when going away for a while, you might want to check with a fence contractor who deals with installations like this, there might be a code that requires emergency vehicles access. I know commercial gate operators require either a strobe or fire box here in Oregon, but not sure about residential.

Dishpointer, why don't you like MightyMule? I'm not set on them but they seem to be popular and price is right. Any sites that have other brands at good prices?

I'm sorry that I haven't posted to this project for awhile but it was on hold waiting for the mason to finish bricking the walls and cutting the stone caps. Winter arrived and delayed everything until spring but he completed everything last month. We still need to run power down to the gate and install the openers but all in all, I think it turned out great for our first try at masonry.

Pic of the right wall

and pic of backside

The stone caps are 4" thick and tie everything together. I will update again once we run power and order the openers.

Impressive. The stone caps really look nice on top of the brick.

A great looking entrance, even more amazing given that it's your first attempt at masonry. I've had experience with dry laid rock walls, but very little with brickwork. You should be proud to drive up to that entryway.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I think it turned out pretty good. I believe that we are going to have a few different companys come out and give us their recommendations, see what we can do ourselves to save money like pull power down to the gate and install the concrete pads for the openers, then hire the rest out as my dad wants everything tied into the phone line when someone pulls up. If all they have to do is install the equipment then the cost won't be as high. There is a requirement for emergency access for the fire department as was mentioned earlier so we need professional help in that area.
