The rate depends on your type of soil. The farm agencys have maps that have all the soil types in your area mapped out. Quality soils will get more money (more incentive) so that people will plant and make sure the soil doesnt erode. for us, the rate went up this year also, its around 133 an ac for our type of soil.

As for planting now what they recommend. is to use weed killer and spray on a 15x15 (foot) grid. where ever the lines match up you plant a tree. makes knowing where to plant a lot easier and my not tearing up all the ground you save your soil. in some parts i dont think i could get in there and till anyway, its moist almost year long (we have a weep). thats where i will put the swamp oak.

Pines they dont want us making a tree farm so any pines (which im not using) would be grouped very close together. i worry enough about my hemlocks with the wooly aldegid, my ash with the emerald ash borer, and who knows what else is around the bend. I figure a nice mix of hardwoods is best for me. Our state does not do a state wide (that i know of) seedling sale, its handeled by each countys conservation district as a money maker for them in the spring. I just dont think the price vs giving up sometype of guarentee is worth it.
