Engineering Question - Bolt Grade and Material

/ Engineering Question - Bolt Grade and Material #11
Renze, 8.8 is approx equivalent to Gr5. Gr8 is about like 10.9. Good points about heat and bending. Up to 400F can be used without changing the metals basic characteristics however. This is a great tool to enable bending of stiff metal with less danger of cracking. To gauge the temp clean the metal down to a shine and heat until natural silver color changes to straw brown. Bend it. If you accidently go past straw to blue its a little oops. If it glows red you have truly compromised the heat treatment badly. Also, threaded rod presents a worst case situation for stress in bending due concentration of stress in the notches. Threads on the inside and outside of the planned bend should be ground off.

You're right, what they call "carf working" at the technical engineering schools in Holland, applies to threaded rods, which means that, on the inside of a thread, more strain occurs than if it was in a similar rod, straight, with the same diameter as the diameter of the threaded rod minus the thread depth.

tractor pulling folks usually have their rough crankshafts ground smooth to make them stronger... It sounds stupid, grinding material away to make it stronger, but it's true...

Well, I was out and about today and stopped at Tractor Supply.
I picked up a hitch pin and a couple of lower link pins.
The one inch diameter hitch pin and a washer seems to work great.
Hope that little pin at the bottom holds up.

Still used a bolt to hold the angle adjustment.
Have to go get a wrench to change the angle.
Doubt I will be doing that very often anyway.

Thanks.
