I have a LT1045. The tractor was fine on Sunday, but would not start on Tues. Just a clicking noise from the starter. Thought the battery might be low, so I hooked up a different battery and still nothing. Nothing but the same clicking sound comming from the starter. Lights work, gages work, but just a clicking from the starter. I noticed the starter was hot. Waited an hour to cool off and still the same clicking sound from the starter. I know its not the battery, but can a starter just go bad without warning? Should I just replace the stater and save myself a service repair charge? I am not good with diagnosing a problem but I can do some repairs.

Check the engine oil level and insure the engine is full of oil. Remove the spark plug and see if the engine can be turned over by spinning the mower drive belt pulley. To me, the starter being hot to the touch indicates something is preventing the starter from spinning the engine.

Remove spark plugs and try to turn it over by hand. If the carb float stuck it might have a cylinder full of gas. DON'T TRY TO TURN IT WITH THE KEY! If it is gas it could blow out and ignite from the plug wire. (I've seen this happen)

Besides what's already been mentioned you could try jumping the solenoid or touch batt power directly to the starter's hot post. Turn the motor bacwards by hand just a bit to make sure the gear isn't jambed. Tap the bottom of the starter where the brushes are with a screw driver or something. If all else fails take the starter off and ground it, see if it works and what it sounds like.
