Engine block heater part 2

I spoke with my dealer today about getting a plug heater installed on my 7500. (I am using a magnetic heater on the oil pan now.) He says heaters are not really needed anymore on todays engines both gas and diesel. Letting the engine warm up while idling is the way to get to operating temp. He hasn't installed a block heater in 5 years on any newer tractor. I would suspect he could make some money selling and installing them, so I do believe his logic. I will continue to warm my oil a few hours before I start it which he said was a small help.

Maybe I'm from the old school, but that block heater is much more effective than any magnetic heater I've seen... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hmmm....my Kubota dealer says he never ships out a new tractor without a block heater in it. He indicated that for the few dollars it represents it can make a big difference. I certainly got one!!

Up here when it gets really cold without a block heater my tractor probably would not start on some days. Need the heater just to get it going.

Cchoate. Hmmm.... that is an interesting perspective that your dealer has on block heaters. I stopped by a Southern Minnesota New Holland dealer last weekend, and asked him (one of the owners) about block heaters. His statement was that a tractor never leaves his dealership without one installed. I've had a couple of diesel trucks now and have always felt that until they get up to operating temp, you are incurring the most wear on the engine. Matt.

I've got mine, Installed it myself on the 2710. I love it. I feel better knowing that the block is warm enough that the oil pump can do its job. We have been in a cold spell here in Saratoga NY. It is been -10 and -20 every morning for the last week.

Chris -- IMO that's just plain bad advice. I see you also live in the snowbelt. Having had tractors both with and without block heaters I now consider them standard equipment.

Just bring the dealer and his diesel to Edmonton. -39 C this morning and see how the diesel starts. If'n it will even turn over.

Not good advice. Install and use the block heater in cold weather as it saves much wear and tear on the engine.

was it a hard install ? i just ordered one from carver. They faxed me the instructions. it seams easy enough but, they talk of cutting the 1/2" rubber line going to the radiator. what is the 1/2" line for ? any advise or tips would be appreciated. pics?

I'd love to see some pics of your 5' of snow. Sure wish we were a little closer to even 1/2 of that here!

If its the standard kubota block heater there is no line to cut. Remove the threaded plug and install the heater.

Sounds as though they are selling you a coolant heater, not a block heater.
