Yesterday, my email [Outlook] downloaded duuplicate messages going back about 2 weeks. That meant it downloaded almost 90 emails that were already downloaded. That was bad enough, but its doing it again as I type. I had just cleaned up yesterday's mess.

Any ideas what causes this & what I can do to prevent it?

thanks

Jack

Try logging into your webmail and delete the messages there. If that fails you;ll likely need a new Outlook profile. Are you using outlook or outlook express?

Outlook has many flavors... is this Outlook Express?

If so, empty your deleted items folder, and start a syncronization run again by doing a Tools -> Synchronize All followed by a Send and Receive.

Are you in a corporate environment using full blown Outlook or using Outlook Express at home for personal stuff?

I'd contact my email service provider and ask why the emails you already dl'd are still on their server.

Thanks for the quick replies - - it is Outlook 2003 [NOT Express].

Did you try deleting the mails using web mail?

Is your deleted email folder in OL empty?

Make sure you got nothing stuck in your outbox in OL.

If after that your still having problems follow this KB for creating a new profile
How to create and configure an e-mail profile in Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003
You should make a note of your old email settings before starting (ie incoming/outgoing mail servers and passwords etc)

I had something a bit similar recently when quite a large number of repeat e-mails kept coming and I kept deleting them only to have them come in again. And then when I went to my webmail, which I normally never check, I found a bunch of e-mails that I'd never received. Of course, I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium which has "Windows Mail" instead of Outlook. When I bought this computer, I let them install Webroot's Spy Sweeper and Norton Anti-Virus, then a short time later, I installed the lastest version of Norton SystemWorks. I liked earlier versions of SystemWorks on my Windows XP computer, but I haven't been happy with this later version on Vista. So I recently dumped ALL of that and installed Norton Internet Security 2009. It's already notified me of a tracking cookie which was the only thing Spy Sweeper ever found. But perhaps the more important thing is that it really sped up my computer and I think all my e-mail is coming through promptly, but only once.

The minute they mentioned Outlook 2003 it kind of implied to me that they may not be running a standard web-mail (POP) protocol. Although web-mail can do (IMAP) too.

I still think it is syncing sickness.... delete OutBox (Stuck sending memos).. clean up the wastebasket and re-sync.
