I'm replacing some rotten porch steps for a friend, and I'm going to use some "choice deck" from Lowes. The bottom of these boards have three deep groves which run the length of the board. These are very visible when you look at an end cut of the board. The steps will have these end cuts exposed, and I just don't like the look of those bottom grooves. There is no way to box the ends in and maintain the original step design that my friend wants. Has anyone found a way to put some sort of trim on the ends of these boards so the end cut doesn't show? I thought I might try to rip the outside edge from one board and then attach that piece to the end of the step board with finishing nails. Before I start experimenting I thought I'd throw it out here to see if someone already has a good answer. (I'm betting Eddie Walker has run into this before!)
