Thks.

If you don't have it yet, I'd weld on some STRONG safety stops and use them every time you get "inside" the trailer frame. Don't want nothin' to happen to ya!

I went out to the shop and took some more pics as more progress has been made. This shows how I have the anchor end cyl mount made. I have a piece of 5" chanel across the subframe on the bottom side at the back of the tongue and another 30" farther back, both are under the subframe. I then ran 2 pieces of 3" chanel from where the tongue crosses the front of the subframe back to the botton of the first 5" chanel. I then ran a piece of 5" chanel flat under these from where the 3" chanel connects to 4" past the rearward chanel. This is where the anchor for the cyl fits. In order for this mount to move it has to push the mount back, and that is stopped by the 3" chanel. The 5" chanel is welded under the subframe and just welding it isn't enough so I made these brackets to give me more welding surface. They weld inside the subframe and weld vertically to the cross chanel. I hope this pic shows what I mean. later, Nat

The live end anchor is shown in this pic. It is a 5"chanel welded across the main frame. I welded the mounting lug to the chanel and then welded a 4 X 3/8" flatbar from the chanel connecting the lug, the 5" chanel and the next forward cross member. Then the floor will be welded to all of this. In order for it to move it would have to bend the 4 X 3/8 plateand the 5" chanel and the 2X2 cross member and shear the welds where the floor is welded down. By welding it to the floor I actually am making a beam that is 12 foot high as the floor is welded to each and every cross member. I hope this pic show it more clear. Later, Nat

The bottom end mounting of the cylinder is totally bomb proof.. But i still have my doubts on the mounting of the top end of the cylinder. I think a dent will occur in the flange of the C beam. ( ihave seen a similar hinge construction dent in my brothers home built front loader)

Adding a triangular piece to the lower end of the C beam (making the hinge plate plus reinforcement triangle cover the whole height of the C beam, running from one horizontal flange to the other) will prevent denting. It will be much stronger if the bend force was carried away to the lower flange.

Mornin Nat,
Real nice project!!! Im just wondering what your planning on using for the box itself. Are you going to use sheet metal sides and frame or do you have an old box ypu can use?

Nat,
Could you post the partnumbers for the hydraulic lift portion of the project (cylinder, pump, reservoir,...)? I looked at northern, and couldn't seem to find the pump you're using. I want to modify my trailer to dump in a similar fashion.

Thanks.
Rob

I finally took some pics of the finished trailer. I painted it black, cause I had black paint, and put the sideboards on it. I have used it several times this week. I bought another house to fix and sell and it needed a new roof. We pulled off 28 squares of shingles and I hauled them to the dump. The first load was just under 2 tons and it didn't even change the sound of the pump.
I stopped at the local wood recycler on the way home and got 5 yards of mulch. Here is the trailer when I got here.

I made a split tailgate for it. The tailgate frame is 1" x 1" tubing with 14 gauge metal panels. A piece of 5/8" rod down thru the end tube and into a 3/4" hole in an angle bracket welded to the rear crossmember makes the latch.

I really hate to tell this, but one mess-up is the tailgate. I had 2 pieces of metal that I was going to use as the filler panels for the gate. I cut them to the length I needed and as they were a little taller than I needed I just left them the height they were and made the bottom hinges to fit them. After I had them pinned in place I opened them up and they won't swing flush with the sides because they hit the tires. When I unload it I swing the gates open till they are close to the tires and use a bungie cord to hold them open. I am going to make a permenant chain to hold them open, but havn't had the time.

Here it is , dumped. It does't strain in the least dumping this much mulch. I don't know how much it will dump, but it already shows me it will dump all I need it to. Mostly it will be used for hauling debri from jobs to the dump. I normally rent a 30 yard dumpster and it will sit there for a week or more then I have to exchange it for an empty. It seems that they never have one when I need it so I have to wait till one comes in. Now I can pull the trailer to the job, load it up and stop by the landfill on my way home.

Please don't laugh at my battery hold down. I have a good battery box at my brothers house, just havn't had the time to run over there. I used some strecthy cord to tie it down till I go get the battery box. Here is the hoist and battery when the trailer is dumped. I hope this helps anyone else who may want a dump trailer. I have almost 1900.00 in it an nearly a week of work. I have had broncitis(sp) and an upper respitory infection so didn't get to work on it a lot. I am nearly well now and have started on another house so the trailer gets used. I have tried to show how I built it and the thought process that I went thru. I know there are some things that aren't perfect and may need tweeking some in the future, but for now I'm very pleased with it.

I for one really appreciate reading and seeing what you did.

I really want one for the wifes mowing business as well. I think it will be a tremendous time saver. She say's I just like spending money and buying toys......

I want to buy / build one that sits high enough that when it is dumping the lip is higher then a wheelbarrow. Then I want to put a slide type door in the tailgate that is about 12" square, the idea being that you would open and close this door (maybe with hydraulics?) to control the release of the materials (mulch) into the wheelbarrow.

Currently they use three folks when doing mulch, one person's job is to fill the wheelbarrow off the trailer. Seems like it would be a lot cheaper to just buy the trailer once and have that person help spread etc.

I have the super heavy duty axles and wheels and tires and am still debating if it would be smarter to build or buy. I will probably elect to use a scissor mechanism on mine if I build as I would rather have that part overbuilt then to get in a situation where it was too light.

I also know my wife, and if I build it with 2' sides as I think it should have for mulch, I will look out one day and it will be filled level with Crusher run or some other "light" materials.....

Thanks so much again for posting this Nat. I think a lot of us have watched with interest.

If you would not mind, I would be interested to see the things you decide to change after operating it for a while.

Just finished reading the topic about home build dump trailer, and must say I learned much from it. By the way, nice job, NAT. Sooooo, I decided to build one. The trailers main frame will made out of 3 x 6 x 1/4 inch wall tubing. The rest of the trailer will be build from either rectangular tube or 5" channel. It will be 5x10 ft, sit on two mobile home axles, and dump by two 2.5- inch dia 24 inch stroke cylinders. Since where ever I'm going to pull the loaded trailer there will be my tractor so I just use it hydraulic system to actuate the cylinders. Maybe down the line I adopt and use a self contain battery-powered system. I noticed some dump trailers have the cylinders applying force toward the hinge point, and some away? Why is that? To my way of thinking I be better of pointing the cylinder toward the tongue of a trailer... I'm I wrong on this?
