AAhhh, but it works better than a lot of commercial drones and can fly where DJI ones refuse to. That is why I have 3 the same. :)

What is an example of something a DJI drone 'refuses to do'?

I believe that he's referring to the restrictions that are now programmed into most commercial drones to keep them from flying where the government doesn't want them going.

Geofencing. Why I was going to purchase a DJI but bought an Autel instead. I'm a big boy. Don't need (or want) a nanny.

Coming from an Autel, the geofence is simply a click to accept responsibility and it's gone. Just like the Autel, I can violate every Federal law and recommendation known if I were to desire.

The flight characteristics and the intelligent flight abilities in the current DJI are way above and beyond the X Star Premiums that I had. I definitely do not miss them at all.

If your emotionally set to love the Autel and have dislike to DJI, no one can make you see the truth. I know, because I was there myself. But since making the jump.... I'll admit it. DJI just makes a better built product, flies way better in many ways, has longer range for both control and light bridge and provides updates to known issues a billion times faster.

I'm aware that saying that will not change your opinion, but to any new purchaser with no bias, I'm telling you that DJI makes a fine machine and should not be discounted from your consideration.

Does that mean drones are pre-programmed with GPS coordinates that they "shouldn't be flying in"? Hadn't heard of that.

Not the older ones, but the current DJI units are. They use the FAA geofence maps to prevent you from inadvertently breaking the law.

That said, it also allows you say FU to the FAA and bypass the location, height and distance limitations.

Thanks. That sounds like too much government.

It's(DJI) isn't Kubota Orange, Autel is.....:D I'm partial. Other thing I like about the Autel is you can fly it stand alone (no cell phone / tablet needed. Mavic's you cannot and I've had excellent luck with the Autel OBD code readers. I have both the hand held and the big screen readers. Excellent products, excellent warranty and excellent support.

Don't get me wrong. DJI is a great product although they are going down the cheap components and materials path at present. That is why two of their chief designers developers quit and are building their own product with better components and less than half the price. DJIs main target now is profit sadly.
Anyway I enjoy building with my own components. I can set my altitude fence and distance fence to whatever I want. The Pixhawk controller I use is capable of much more than I am ever going to use.
DJI probably would not let me fly on my own property which is about 60 klm from an Air Force Base as it is a restricted zone, however my property is listed as a model aircraft flying zone as is my mates place not far away. This also gives me insurance cover. Under those rules I can fly to 400 ft however I would not do that as I have a few rogue private pilots flying low sometimes and a lot of Careflight helicopters that pass over. I have an exemption to fly my gliders higher than that, however I do not fly my gliders here much anymore. I have another place for that.
As an aside, I can buy any components for my drones from any number of places, unlike DJI. After several years of flying drones all I have ever had to replace is props and batteries.
As mentioned above, there are many choices of drones now other than DJI.
I have a gimbal I can fit to the drone for smoother videos but it just adds weight and my camera does all I want it to for $70. It has inbuilt stability. I can get some beautiful shots off my videos.
Like 5030 says. I can fly my drone with a transmitter if I want to have some aerobatic fun but I prefer using my Tablet and doing missions.

As for DJI geofencing, I think it is great in many ways as there are so many newbies and idiots out there that will try to fly anywhere as has been shown in the past. This prevents airspace intrusions and ballparks etc.
For a professional, there are ways to overcome geofencing and I doubt a newbie would have the knowledge to implement the changes.

Having looked at pics of your Drones before, I am impressed, again....

As to cosmetics. That doesn't improve the quality, accuracy, dependability or functionality of a Drone. I've saw several "home built" Drones. Never saw one that was pretty. Manufacturers of Drones make them pretty to sell better. I bought my Autel because it was Grabber Orange. Then after flying it a few times I realized that's an improved function as well. Much easier to see in flight.

I really like your Drones and am duly impressed with your talents!!!

Looks like Kubota Orange 2 to me Richard...... Why I've ordered one. That and your recommendation. Got the hard case and the extra batteries and props and stuff. Still need a tablet, have a cell phone (Andriod) but I believe the tablet will be easier for me to see. Any recommendation of that?

Hey, this discussion reminds me.

FAA has sent me two emails.

The first was sent on 5 May about the implementation of Remote Identification (Remote ID). Basically adds a "signature" to the Drone so someone tracking it can identify who it belongs to. I actually have no problem with that.

The second was sent on 8 May about the responses received concerning Remote ID. There are 1.5 million Drones and 160,000 licensed pilots in the U.S. 53,000 responded to the first email with questions and concerns. This prompted FAA to respond saying more information is forthcoming.

Did anyone else get these emails?

I purchased my Certification and Registration with FAA when I bought my Drone. I keep a copy of the Certification in my carrying case.

I use a 7x9" tablet. Went to Best Buy and purchased a $100 tablet. Can't remember the brand. I couldn't see my phone well enough. I constantly monitor my flight data which is displayed across the top of the screen. It was way too small on my phone.

Looking forward to your posts when you get started flying. We should start a bet pool on the first crash..... :D

At my age (70), I have a heck of a time seeing the Android phone and texting (I do very little) has to be with a soft tipped pointer. I cannot input anything with my finger tip and I tried the voice to text, once was enough for that.

I presume any tablet so long as it's WiFi, has a card slot and a USB port and I'm good. Correct?

When I get it and sorted out, my first flight will be in the middle of my 40 acre back hay (after I've cut it of course. No trees, no obstacles and no one to bug me. Not looking forward to crashing it, but will probably occur. I take it they are fairly crash worthy?

Ordered it from B&H. Was going to get it from Amazon but I don't like Bezos so I didn't. I know that is political so I apologize for that comment.

Personally I use a Samsung Tab S4. Still hard to see in direct sunlight but once I have programmed my drone it is only used to monitor the battery and I can hit the RTH or Land mode if any aircraft unexpectedly appear.
My Tablet came with a 'pen' which is great if you have stubby fingers but I manage OK without it.
One good thing, the pen does not need a battery unlike the iPads.
I do have an iPad that I can use as well. The program runs on all formats.
There is a C port on the Samsung and mine came with a small adapter that converts it to USB. There is an extra slot for a mem card as well.

Thats me, stubby digits. Stubby arthritic digits at that. While neither her nor there, Chemo about ruined my hands. Little feeling in my finger tips anymore. Doctor says it will come back after time but so far, it sucks, big time. Imagine trying to pick up small parts like small hex nuts and not being able to feel them. Thats me and it's very frustrating at times. Picking my nose has become a chore..... I cope but it's always a challenge. Least I'm on this side of the dirt. Should be happy with that.

LOL I have had a couple of hand ops as well (dupingtons) but mostly OK now. I do know where you are coming from picking up small nuts and screws. My drones have heaps of them!!

I tell myself, "I'm not going to drop this one", But I do everytime.

Alien mentions programmed flight. I've never done that. I'll have to try it sometime. My flights are too random for that to be of much use. Usually taking pics or video of varying targets.

When I launch I look at the Drone until it clears any obstacles. Then I look at the monitor only. Look at the Drone again when getting ready to land. I "catch" my Drone and never land on the ground.
