dozer mounted brush grinder.

So a few years age i was at a logging equipment show here in oregon and saw a fecon style grinder head mounted on a john deere 650 dozer. it had all the guards and winch and what not on it, does anyone know where to find something like this now? I have looked but found nothing.
The company i work for is looking for a rig like this to use on rail road right of way clearing.

Any help would be great.

I think most of the dozer based machines went away, but I could be wrong. They made a poor platform for mulching. You can't see good out of these things in the first placee, then you put the engine out front and it gets even worse. Not to mention the radiator is right there to catch all of the debris.

well, they are not good for production, they have a very low GPM, and they cant really do any fine mulching. Most of all the overall out look is kinda crappy. we had one on a D6N, i could do more work with the D8H and a sheer blade...

what machine would you guys recommend for for right of way clearing on a rail road that has not been cleared for 10-15 years. we have 70 miles of rail road to get cleared and keep clear.

How do you bid(and win?) a job without the slightest idea of what type of equipment your going to use?


How far do you have to clear(and maintain) from track centerline? Type of material? Terrain? From my dealings with CSX they were extremely specific on when and where we could work near their property. So, is this a live train route? Can you actually get "on" the track, or are you relegated to the ROW? I don't know how anyone could offer any suggestions without knowing these basic questions.

ok. hears the deal, the company i work for owns this 70 miles of rail road. sowe can get on and off the tracks at anytime at any point. the areas we are looking to clear are mostly flat. the brush is anything from grass to 4-6 inch tree.

hope this makes it a bit more clear.

I have watched Norfolk Southern use this. It is good for doing grades and slopes along the line, and I have seen it take down trees more than a foot in diameter. It may be too slow for your use. The other guys that have more experience can comment...

The excavator would be the ideal platform. Depending on how wide you need to clear, you could even put it on a flat rail car.

A rubber tyre excavator with a mulcher head is the go for working on rail lines. When a train comes along it is easy to get out of the way so there is no need to shut the track down.:thumbsup:
