My new Massey 2615 has two canister type fuel filters, one labeled primary and the other labeled secondary. There's no mention of them in the owners manual except to change them every 500 hours, which seems like a long time. They are about the size of an oil filter and are arrange so that the fuel flows directly from one to the other.
Could one be a water separator?

Most of the fuel systems have a petcock to drain the water either before the filters and/or below the primary filter. You should check this regularly to remove any water that may be in your system. I prefer the older style setups with a glass bowl, this allowed you to visually check the condition of the fuel without taking anything loose.

Should be a pre-filter with drain for water, bigger trash and a finer filter next in line. I would go a little earlier on the first change to get any of the initial junk out of there. Also if you're not putting on big hours a year and trust your fuel source, once a year or bi-annually change.
