Dogs wondering off to die?

We kept an American Bulldog named Diesel for a friend. He had as deep a bark as any dog I've known.

Dogs evolved as den animals; it is instinctive that they die far away from their den in order to not draw other predators to the den. We had a Cocker Spaniel that was very ill, and it too left the house and the yard never to be heard from again.

Sorry to hear that.

My guess is probably didn't get far, but may of hid himself pretty well. Had a friend this happened to and his dog hid himself behind a log.
That's what my old vet said. He felt the animal senses something wrong and heads for safety. I found my lab dead, years ago, under the swing set, first and only time he ever did that.

Our beloved family German shepherd “Max” wandered off a bit and died. I found his remains while hunting in the woods a few weeks after he disappeared.

I sure hope you promptly got another best friend!

I've seen cats find their way to a dark corner to die, usually with no previous warning. Closets seem to be the most frequent.

Dogs on the other hand have seemed to always find a place near their favorite resting spot near their master. I've never had a dog just walk off into the woods to die alone.

Regardless of whether you friend is canine or feline, it's a very sad day and long remembered. My sincere condolences.

This is all very sad. I guess I was fortunate. Our dog passed laying next to me by the couch in his favorite spot. He loved laying next to me getting his petting. He was the best.

I’ve only had one dog pass. We had him 14 years. It is extremely hard.

Anyone with experience on this? How far have they gone? I've heard that this is commonl and am now trying to find ours. Diesel our English Mastiff is 10 years old and really took a down turn this last week. Yesterday breathing was heavy and would not eat so we made an appointment for the vet today to have him put down. Even dug the hole yesterday. This morning when we woke up he was gone. I've covered a lot of ground today looking but unfortunately no luck so far.

I have had dogs in pain den up where it was hard to find them. "Crawled under the porch to die," is pretty common, I think.

My best buddy, Rocky Dog passed 8 years ago tomorrow; I still can't talk about it without tearing and choking up. I've never known another pain like that...
